More about this role
Every day the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) works to protect and enhance Scotland's environment. As an Environment Protection Officer, you will have a critical frontline role which has variety, responsibility, and the ability to make a real difference for people and the environment, preventing and stopping harm. Our regulatory responsibilities cover activities that may pollute water; activities that may pollute air; and waste storage, transport, treatment and disposal.
You’ll be a key part of a team which covers the Falkirk, Alloa, and Stirling areas of Scotland, and part of a wider network of experienced colleagues to support you in your role. You’ll nominally be based from our Stirling office but the role will be a mixture of home, office, and field working. There will be a regular need to travel and undertake site visits or pollution investigations when periods of standing and walking will be necessary. A valid driver’s licence and a vehicle will be essential.
You'll be responsible for:

- Assessing environmental performance against environmental legislation and advising permit holders on how they can protect the environment and human health from activities.
- Providing advice and guidance in response to enquiries from external stakeholders, permit holders, businesses, members of the public, other agencies and SEPA colleagues in relation to compliance with environmental regulation.
- Leading investigations into medium and high risk non-compliant activities to seek a solution to environmental offences, including recommending appropriate enforcement action in line with enforcement and governance principles. Wherever possible you will influence and negotiate with permit holder to complete remedial work within reasonable timeframes to resolve environmental harm without the need to initiate enforcement action.

You will need to ensure compliance with Health and Safety procedures are followed as sites may sometimes be situated in hostile environments, and you may need to deal with situations that can be confrontational. Good communication, influencing and persuading skills are therefore essential.
We believe this is a challenging and exciting front-line role. Your decisions or actions taken will have direct implications for regulated industry, stakeholders and the protection of the environment. You’ll feel supported and trusted to do the right thing and you will receive support from colleagues to develop within the role.

Salary
We provide a competitive starting salary. We are a Scottish Living Wage Employer Salary progression by annual increments to the top of the appropriate band. 35-hour working week for full-time employees.
Flexible working
As a proud user of the ‘Happy to talk flexible working 'logo, all our job applicants and employees are entitled to request flexible working arrangements such as reduced hours or a change to location for vacancies. Some roles aren't as flexible as others but we'll always aim to make sure your working life is well balanced with your life outside the work place.
We also operate a flexi-time scheme, which allows you to work flexibly between the hours of 7.30am and 7.30pm and there’s no limit on the amount of flexi leave you can take in a 4-week period providing you are within the limits for credits and debits at the end of the 4-week period.
Annual leave
We provide a generous annual leave entitlement, starting from 29 days per year, increasing to 33 days after five years of reckonable service. We also offer seven additional public holidays. Annual leave and public holiday entitlement is pro-rated for part-time employees.
Staff also have the ability to purchase additional annual leave up to 10 days (pro-rated).
An employer supported Volunteering Scheme which allows every member of staff two day’s paid leave per year to participate in voluntary work.
Pension
We participate in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) administered by Falkirk Council. The scheme operates on a career average revalued earnings (CARE) basis. The LGPS is a qualifying scheme and exceeds the standards set by the Government under the Pensions Act 2011.
Health
Occupational sick pay (entitlements based on length of reckonable service).
Generous maternity, adoption, shared parental and paternity leave schemes (dependent on length of continuous service with SEPA).
Occupational health benefits and access to a free Employee Assistance Programme which provides life management services.
