To interpret and accurately dispense prescriptions and requests for medication for patients, according to department procedures Calculating dose/volumes. Production of dispensing label via the JAC Pharmacy IT system. Ensuring that out of stock items are obtained as soon as possible so that patient care is not compromised and that all appropriate people are kept informed of the situation.

Assembly of prescribed items including counting and/or reconstitution of medicines. Affixing of dispensing labels and checking them for accuracy. Annotating prescriptions to ensure all details as to what was dispensed etc. are recorded.

Record private prescription details in the private prescription book when necessary Ensures all supplementary/additional information required by user is provided i.e. patient information leaflets, medication protocols. Take in out-patient prescriptions according to department procedures including checking payment status, and taking prescription charges if necessary to ascertaining urgency and ensuring all work to be dispensed has the necessary and correct information and meets legal requirements according to SOPs. This may involve communication with patients and their relatives/carers, with language problems or other disabilities.

Take payment for NHS prescription charges (undertake the secure handling of cash, cheques and credit card transactions) if required and ascertain any reason for non-payment/exemption. Calculate, collect and record private prescription charges. All documentation for prescription payment or exemption is completed as required. To participate in Controlled Drug dispensing scheme and dispense in accordance with dispensary SOPs ensuring that department of health guidelines are followed at all times for controlled drug management and all questions or queries referred on to dispensary manager or in her absence Assistant Dispensary Manager as appropriate Assist in the office in ordering of urgent medicines and controlled drugs, also to receive goods into the department, unpack and check delivery against delivery note, order or requisition and booking in stock on the JAC system To put goods away in the correct location, checking computer records to ascertain the correct location if appropriate.

To participate in the return to shelves of drugs after use. To maintain the correct level of stock requirements for the area To participate in the management of medication returns ensuring recycling and destruction as per local policy. Provide a general housekeeping service to dispensary, according to standard operating procedures and ensuring that the working areas and equipment are clean and tidy. Assist in the supply of pharmaceutical products, to departments, in accordance with agreed stock lists.

Maintain good stock control and stock rotation by regular expiry date checks, daily stock takes and receipt of goods to the department Assist in maintenance of records; including daily and monthly filing of prescriptions and other documents. Answer telephone calls from wards and departments; pass to appropriate person if required. To take part in the weekend rota and late duties as requested. General duties as requested by departmental managers.

Undertake any other duties as specified that may be required within the nature and grade of the post by the Chief Pharmacist.
