Milton Keynes, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

A whole-time Consultant Nephrologist post is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a consultant replacement post joining the existing Oxford Kidney Unit team of nephrologists providing around 8000 outpatient appointments per month and leading care for 600 patients on dialysis across 7 locations. The postholder will be primarily based in Milton Keynes but will be required to travel to Oxford and potentially other satellite units (advance notice given where possible).

This post will provide a consultant-led outpatient service. The postholder may also be involved in the renal procedures service. There will be no on-call component of this role initially, however, the postholder will have a caseload of dialysis patients and may see transplanted follow-up patients. There may be an opportunity to join the on-call rota if this were desirable to the appointed applicant

The Oxford Kidney Unit provides a comprehensive portfolio of both tertiary and secondary services based in Oxford with a co-provider structure delivering dialysis services in Milton Keynes, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Swindon and Banbury. The Renal medicine service provides dialysis, general nephrology and acute renal failure services on a regional basis serving a population of approximately 1.7 million. It provides a specialist as well as general nephrology service to the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire and to parts of other surrounding counties. The Renal service has benefited from a well-established and stable network commissioning framework based on a realistic and soundly evaluated expectation of the growth of clinical demand.
The Oxford Kidney Unit currently treats 600 dialysis patients (70 PD, 24 home haemodialysis) and 1400 transplant recipients under follow up; in 2018 there were 295 transplants (this includes kidney, SKPT, islets, pancreas alone and bowel transplants). There are about 250-300 native and transplant biopsies per annum.

**Clinical**: This post will provide a consultant-led outpatient service. The postholder may also be involved in the renal procedures service. There will be no on-call component of this role initially, however, the postholder will have a caseload of dialysis patients and may see transplanted follow-up patients. There may be an opportunity to join the on-call rota if this were desirable to the appointed applicant.

**Facilities for study and training**: Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (OUHNHSFT) is a teaching hospital Trust, as such there will be opportunities for study and training, to be agreed once appointed.

It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. There may also be the opportunity to have a support role for medical students studying at the University of Buckingham.
