There has never been a more exciting time to join the high performing Planning Team at Leicestershire. The County is one of the principal producers of minerals in the country and the delivery of these raw materials and waste infrastructure will be fundamental in achieving the County’s growth agenda; an ambition to deliver over £600 million of infrastructure to support thousands of new homes and millions of square metres of employment over the next 30 years.

The County Council currently has a vacancy for a Principal Planning Officer to undertake work associated with the minerals, waste and county planning functions of the authority. As well as your own case load, the role involves the supervision of career grade planning officers, deputising for management and the authorisation of delegated decisions.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual with good communication and negotiation skills, a high level of organisation and a commitment to embracing the County Council’s values and behaviours of positivity; trust and respect; flexibility; and openness and transparency. In return you would be joining a friendly team in a progressive authority that is passionate about its people and would invest in your development. The County Council is supportive of flexible and remote working arrangements.

- Relevant degree and RTPI accredited postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience.
- Significant experience in development management or local plan making; county council planning matters; monitoring development; handling complex planning maters with a high public profile in a politically sensitive environment; enforcement; presenting at planning committee; and participating in appeals and/or examinations.
- Experience in supervising members of a team, providing constructive support, mentoring and monitoring performance; deputising for senior colleagues; and reviewing and authorising reports.
- Excellent knowledge of planning legislation, policy and good practice; minerals and waste operations; local government procedures and governance; and regional and national strategic planning issues.
- Excellent skills in written and verbal communication; numeracy and analysis; an ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships; organisations and ability to manage competing demands and deadlines; and driving service improvements.
- A solutions orientated attitude with political tact, diplomacy and an ability to provide helpful, objective and consistent advice.
