This is an exciting opportunity to join the recently formed Black Country Pathology Service by the joining together of four Trusts: Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust and Walsall NHS Healthcare Trust.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who would welcome the challenge to join our friendly team in this hospital laboratory and participate in the delivery of a single integrated, high quality pathology service to the Trusts and GPs in the area as a hub and spoke model.

The BCPS provides comprehensive pathology service to an approximate population of 1.8 million, due for full implementation in 2020.We are a fully UKAS accredited, forward looking and dynamic department using modern equipment to deliver a quality routine and acute service to the Trust and surrounding GPs. The department processes 100,00 Histology specimens.

Main duties of this role comprise receipt, sorting, organisation and data entry for a wide variety of diagnostic tissue samples submitted to the Department for investigation.

To participate in the routine duties of the Histopathology Department, as part of a team, under the direction and supervision of Biomedical Scientists (BMS 1 and above) ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Take part in the specimen entry process using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) (Winpath). Ensure that all samples / request forms are correctly matched and fulfil the specimen acceptance criteria of the Department. Highlight any discrepancies to a senior member of staff.

To undertake laboratory administrative tasks including packaging and referral of histological material for primary or secondary reporting by an external service provider. Ensure accurate records of referral and return of material are maintained.

Filing and archiving of all material both received in, and produced by, the laboratory. Retrieval of archived material from the archive for multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings as required.

Sorting and delivery of external post to areas in the Department.

Replenish stocks of consumable items in Specimen Reception and the Specimen Trimming Room and distribute to internal and external users of the service as required.
