Chaplains require excellent communication skills to engage easily with people from all kinds of backgrounds, including those of different religious traditions and those of no faith. Pastoral sensitivity is an absolute essential, together with the ability to work within what can sometimes be very distressing situations. Owing to the age profile of patients receiving care at Bishop Auckland Hospital, providing religious and sacramental care remains a significant aspect of chaplaincy here, therefore the chaplain appointed must be prepared to meet this need. Chaplains need to be team players, working as part of a mutually supportive and multi-disciplinary team; and to demonstrate courtesy, sensitivity and a deep personal spirituality.

Meanwhile they need to be adaptable so the care they give is always appropriate to the situation they encounter.
