Overview:
The Data Protection and Information Governance branch is responsible for ensuring that Social Security Scotland complies with its obligations under data protection, freedom of information and records management law and policy. We do this in a number of ways including:

- managing requests for information under data protection and freedom of information laws including requests from third parties;
- investigating and responding to personal data breaches;
- supporting teams to carry out data protection impact assessments and ensuring Social Security Scotland implements privacy by design approaches;
- setting standards for data protection and records management, carrying out awareness raising and assurance work on compliance with legislation and policies.

The post-holder will be required to lead on issues of particular complexity or sensitivity as necessary and will use their knowledge and experience to build capacity and support the professional development of members of the team.

The post-holder will also represent data protection issues in a variety of forums and groups in Social Security Scotland. The post-holder will contribute to identifying opportunities for improvement and learning in order to support the branch’s continuous improvement approach to compliance with information governance requirements.

We take a learning-based and continuous improvement approach to our work and our function in supporting colleagues across Social Security Scotland to follow good practice in managing personal data and information.

This is a high-profile and exciting area, with continuing political, public and media interest. Dundee is the location of the Social Security Scotland's headquarters, with Glasgow our other main location. The post-holder will be able to work from either location. Some travel between locations will be required.

**Responsibilities**:
The role is within the Data Protection Team, which forms part of the Data Protection and Information Governance branch. The post-holder is responsible for managing a team of data protection practitioners and data protection advisers (currently four staff) which is responsible for ensuring compliance with our obligations including:

- investigating and managing personal data incidents;
- ensuring data protection impact assessments are carried out as required;
- providing advice on data protection issues on Social Security Scotland’s corporate functions;
- carrying out learning and awareness activity to support data protection compliance across Social Security Scotland;
- maintaining the record of processing activity;
- providing advice to ensure contracts with suppliers meet data protection requirements;
- producing guidance and creating communications on data protection issues; and
- establishing a new data protection network across Social Security Scotland.

Qualifications:
No specific qualifications required for this Post.

1. You will have demonstrable practical knowledge of data protection with experience of taking a lead role in an information governance environment.

2. You will have excellent people management skills and be able to confidently engage with colleagues at all levels across an organisation to assess, explain, persuade and influence them in good information governance practices.

3. You will be confident in analysing complex information, demonstrate excellent risk management skills and have the ability to make sound recommendations.

4. You will have a strong track record of continuous improvement, working closely with others to identify where things could be made better and then working in partnership to make those improvements happen.

While a professional qualification in a relevant area of data protection or information governance would be an advantage, holding one is not essential as we provide all our staff with the opportunity to undertake a formal qualification in data protection.
