At DfE, we are proud of the commitment we make to diversity and inclusion and of the progress we have made. We have active & vibrant staff networks, special leave policies and workplace adjustments put in place for those who need them. We are continuing to build a diverse DfE, in an inclusive environment which nurtures and realises potential in all, at all levels.
Equality and Diversity - Department for Education
The Department for Education’s Strategy Unit (SU) is seeking to recruit for an exciting and stretching Grade 7 Strategy Adviser role, as we deliver ministerial priorities across skills, schools and families.
The Department for Education works to provide children’s services, education and skills training that ensures opportunity is equal to all. At our heart, we are the department for realising potential - which in turn powers our economy, strengthens society and increases fairness.
The Strategy Unit sits at the centre of the Department, tackling some of the biggest and most complex issues within education, skills and children’s social care policy. We are a multi-disciplinary team of over 20, including people who have worked at management consultancies, think tanks, in education & teaching, and other government departments. We are in the central Strategy and Delivery directorate, alongside colleagues who specialise in delivery, performance, major projects and analysis.
We are physically located in two Hubs: one in Sheffield and one in London.
We work closely with Ministers and Special Advisers, HM Treasury and No10, teams across DfE and government, and a wide array of education leaders and thinkers.
Our function is to:
- Support the Secretary of State, Permanent Secretary and the Department’s Leadership Team to set and maintain strategic direction, articulating key trade-offs and supporting them to make choices.
- Undertake short, incisive projects to develop new policy in response to Ministerial priorities, often including new analysis to break down complex problems.
- Support the Department to engage with the most forward-thinking and experienced external voices, ensuring our strategy and policies are evidence-based and future-focused, including in the lead up to a general election.
- House the Department’s Behavioural Insights Unit, currently staffed by 3 FTE running regular projects and trials on key ministerial priority areas.
**Job description**:
You will be joining as a Grade 7 within the team. This means you will be leading high profile projects and workstreams: scoping the work, maximising its value add, and ensuring it has lasting impact.
You will also have an important corporate role within the Strategy Unit to help to continue to make our team a brilliant and enjoyable place to work. We pride ourselves on our friendly, supportive team culture, built by every member of the team.
**Person specification**:
This is a diverse team and there are wide mix of skills and experience that will make you successful in this role.
It is not essential to have policy knowledge or experience of working in the education sector, though you should be comfortable rapidly developing this expertise. Above all, you will be an excellent problem solver - capable of breaking down and structuring complex problems, analysing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information and thinking creatively to generate recommendations.
**Essential criteria - please evidence in your personal statement and CV**:
- Leadership: you will be comfortable setting direction, balancing your use of evidence and judgement to provide clarity to the wider team and deliver successful outcomes;
- A strong logical and analytical skill-set: you will be expected to be able to analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitative information to come to an evidence-based policy position;
- Written and verbal communication: you will be a strong communicator, able to deliver complex messages in simple fashion and influence senior stakeholders and ministers;
- Stakeholder engagement: you will be confident developing high-quality relationships quickly to support the aims and objectives of your work;
- Ability to work at pace and adapt flexibly to rapidly changing circumstances: you will be comfortable dealing with ambiguity and competing priorities, remaining adaptable as and when conditions
