**Job description**:
As Head of our Internal AI programme and Data Science engagement, you will have a key leadership role in driving forwards our aim to make the Department for Transport (DfT) a leading department in the use of AI. You will drive forward the engagement on the use of Data Science and AI across the Department. You will have the opportunity to engage our internal and external stakeholders to identify the highest impact areas to work in and lead innovative projects.

We are an agile team working on a range of projects across the Department, including supporting DfT’s Agencies to ensure decisions are underpinned by robust analysis. Passionate about innovation, we bring new ideas and approaches to the most challenging issues the department faces. We leverage the full spectrum of OR and data science techniques from systems thinking, and modelling to AI, machine learning and Digital Twins to solve high profile and technically challenging problems both ourselves and in partnerships with a range of academic partners.

Our team has access to large amounts of compute and cutting-edge tools via Google Cloud Platform, enabling ambitious digital and data projects. You’ll have access to support from Google business partners, project managers, data engineers and domain specialists. You will be supported with dedicated Learning & Development days where you can spend time learning whatever you think best. You will have the opportunity to work with data engineers, digital leads, analytics, and data science colleagues, as well as directly with policy leads across the department, wider government, and academia.

**In this role, your key responsibilities will include**:
**Leading on the engagement and development of the internal AI programme, including**:

- Coordination between the various relevant functions such as procurement, digital etc to ensure the department has a robust approach to the internal use of AI
- Departmental engagement to shape the technical programme, ensuring prioritisation of tasks to departmental priorities
- Engagement with the various relevant governance boards (AI board/ data and AI tech board)
- Lead on the development of the internal AI skills and capability framework and define training and awareness for all levels of officials through to ministers.

**Leading on the external facing elements of the Data Science and AI team programme including**:

- The Data Science in Transport conferences and hack events
- The Data Science in Transport cross
- government Board (chaired by DfT Chief Analyst)
- The academic and industrial partnerships
- Engaging with the x-gov AI working group and other x gov functions
- Ministerial and departmental briefings, Parliamentary Questions and Freedom of Information requests with an internal AI element.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills to engage with industry partners both inside and outside of the department.

You will be innovative and embrace learning about new advances in technologies and cutting-edge tools. You will enjoy working collaboratively with specialists across the department and industry to achieve our aim to cement DfT as a leading department in the use of AI.

**Additional information**

You will have the option to be based either in London attracting the London pay scale, or in Leeds, Birmingham or Hastings attracting the national pay scale.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
