**Job Introduction**

New Scientist is looking for a creative Assistant Picture Editor to help manage its picture desk in London.

Reporting to the Picture Editor, they will have a flair for design and have bags of ideas about how to make our online content sing. They will also assist in sourcing appropriate and engaging imagery for the award-winning print magazine.

The **Assistant Picture Editor** will also work closely with the audience team and help grow this relationship and will be responsible for sourcing engaging imagery for social media and other digital platforms.

Applicants should be proficient in Photoshop, and familiar with Adobe InDesign. Highly motivated, enthusiastic, and self-starting, they will confidently maintain our visual standards - working closely with our news, features, culture, audience, and arts teams and be keen to get involved in projects across the company including in commercial, marketing and events. They will work closely with other teams on innovative digital projects and on visual experiments across our powerful social media channels.

**Main Responsibilities**
- ** **Understand and translate briefs from the Editorial team and produce visual representations for content
- Source pictures for online stories for our website and for social media platforms
- Crop and edit images when required
- Produce stories in the digital Content Management System when needed, and making sure pictures, headlines, captions, and other page furniture are as desired
- Work closely with colleagues across all editorial departments, and across marketing, commercial and technology, to ensure visual standards are kept high

- Familiarity with standard picture editing tools
- Excellent visual flair
- A passionate interest in both science and technology
- A good understanding of digital journalism
- Social media experience
- Able to work effectively under pressure
- Adaptable and proactive, with a problem-solving attitude
- Strong organisation and time management skills
- Work to tight deadlines
- Happy collaborating with many colleagues, and good communication skills
