Consultant Neurologist

Brighton, United Kingdom 379 University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Consultant Neurologist - Special Interest in Multiple Sclerosis

The departure of our existing Multiple Sclerosis neurologist brings the opportunity for a neurologist to join an expanding neurology department at a tertiary centre and shape the future of MS care within Sussex. We are looking to recruit a neurologist with an interest in MS, full time or part time, to drive this change.

This is a pivotal time for Neurology at University Hospitals Sussex. In recent years the service has grown significantly and will soon relocate into a new purpose built neuroscience centre in Brighton to once again work alongside Neurosurgery and Neurosciences.

The merger between BSUH and Western Foundation Trust in 2021 to form University Hospitals Sussex provided the opportunity to better co-ordinate the care of neurological patients and ensure greater equity of provision of services. This is a welcome strategic development in Neurology where the consultant workforce across Sussex already work in collaboration to provide inpatient care; all Sussex consultants have admitting rights to the neurological ward and participate in the after hours oncall rota.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wishes to be a central part in developing a regional service. Additionally there are opportunities for the appropriate postholder to forge links with the MS services at St George’s University Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London.

**The clinical duties of the post include the following**:

- General neurology and MS outpatient clinics, including admin
- MS prescribing and review
- MS nurse support - hospital and community
- MS MDTs
- MS Management meetings
- MS Service development
- Neuroradiology meeting
- Supervision of junior doctors in relation to neurological care and participation in teaching and educational activity within the Trust as required
- Royal Sussex County Hospital Ward Referrals
- Sussex Neurology on-call rota (see below)
- Consultant of the Week (see below)

There is currently no expectation to be on site whilst on-call at weekends except in an emergency. In such cases, time of in lieu or payment will be made upon mutual agreement with the line manager and in line with Trust policy.

Consultant of the week

When the postholder is acting as the consultant of the week for UHSussex inpatients, the consultant will be based at the PRH site to support the inpatient activity and the junior medical staff. The work template will be adjusted to facilitate this. This activity will move to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in early 2023.

Outpatient clinic activity will be undertaken at RSCH +/- PRH.
