**Job summary**:
The DCMS Tourism Team works with Ministers to set government policy on tourism, and to support and drive growth in the sector: pre-pandemic, tourism accounted for 4% of GVA, £75bn of spend, and 1.7m jobs.

The team supports both the supply side - with stakeholders such as accommodation providers, attractions, and leisure venues, as well as local authorities and Destination Management Organisations - and those generating demand, including our sponsorship of VisitEngland and VisitBritain (the British Tourism Authority).

The team works to deliver policy outcomes that support the recovery, growth and resilience of the visitor economy sector and to ensure that policy affecting the sector is consistent across government and supports the objectives of the Tourism Recovery Plan. We are looking for a Senior Policy Advisor to support the UK’s world-leading business events sector, which facilitates £165bn of business a year through trade shows, conferences and exhibitions and £30bn in direct visitor spending, to transition from recovery to growth.

Business events are a key part of the visitor economy generating £31bn per year in 2019 in direct spending by event attendees and supporting over 300,000 jobs. Whilst the UK’s conference and meetings sector is making a recovery from the impact of the Covid-pandemic, international competition is fierce - since 2019, the UK has dropped from 3rd to 6th in the global rankings for events held.

Attracting more of these events to the UK - which take place year-round and often fill hotels midweek
- would offset the seasonality of leisure tourism in many regional destinations while attracting more high-value international business visitors, who typically spend £500 more during their trip than the average visitor.

Business events also play a significant role in knowledge transfer within a range of industries uplifting the economic prosperity of UK sectors. The Tourism team is working closely with stakeholders to secure the sustainable growth of the events sector.

**Job description**:
Key responsibilities are likely to include:

- Deliver a strategy to support the business events sector and the business events elements of the UK’s Tourism Recovery Plan.
- Lead senior stakeholder engagement through the Tourism Industry Council sub-group, the Events Industry Board Working Group.
- Lead engagement across Whitehall to embed the business events strategy across HMG.
- Work to build regional stakeholder relationships.
- Support VisitBritain’s Business Events Growth Programme including developing and pursuing Ministerial advocacy requests.
- Keep abreast of developments in an internationally competitive industry, understanding what other countries are doing to support the sector.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Requirements**:

- Ability to assimilate, distil and present policy options and provide thoughtful and clear advice to senior stakeholders.
- Ability to lead on the development of a range of policy areas simultaneously.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with stakeholders and organisations.
- Ability to proactively solve problems, using a wide range of skills and approaches, to defend our sector’s interests and reach workable solutions.
- An ability to ‘see the big picture’ and grasp how this affects your own work and other Departments’ agendas.

Desirable Skills:

- Previous experience of working in and/or knowledge of the tourism, hospitality or business events sector.

**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

- Working Together
- Communicating and Influencing
- Making Effective Decisions
- Seeing the Big Picture

**Benefits**:

- Alongside your salary of £31,884, Department for Culture, Media and Sport contributes £8,608 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.DCMS values its staff and offers a wide range of benefits to everyone who works here.
