Role Responsibility:
THIS ROLE IS AN ACA ROLE WITH ELEMENTS OF AN ECA SKILL SET - WORKING ON THE HDU CONTRACT WITH UHNM.

The role of the Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) is to support clinically qualified practitioners in the provision of high quality and effective pre-hospital clinical care, responding to a wide variety of situations including medical/ trauma related emergencies, inter-hospital transfers, urgent hospital admissions and other allocated operational activities commensurate with the role.

The ECA will drive a range of vehicles provided by ERS Medical under both emergency and non-emergency conditions as required.
- The post holder will work under the direction and/or supervision of a clinically qualified practitioner e.g. technician, Paramedic, Paramedic Practitioner, Emergency/ Community Care Practitioner or Clinical Supervisor where available.
- The ECA will be expected to act in accordance with ERS Medical policies, procedures and protocols and within the scope of practice of their role as ECA.
- Under direction of a clinically qualified practitioner, assist and support in the provision of high quality and effective pre-hospital clinical care to the community, responding as appropriate to all categories of emergency, urgent and patient transport calls as requested.
- To drive a range of vehicles as provided and directed by ERS Medical under emergency and urgent and normal driving conditions as required, and where qualified in accordance with ERS Medical policies, the IHCD Ambulance Driving Manual guidelines, current legislation and to drive the allocated vehicle in a manner appropriate to the conditions, and with due consideration for the safety of vehicle occupants and other road users.
- Under the direction of a clinically qualified practitioner, where required, assist and support in the provision of emergency clinical scene management.
- Ensure that all patient report forms both electronic and paper-based pertaining to the role are completed accurately, legibly and according to ERS Medical policies and taking into account current legislation and Caldicott guidelines.
- Ensure the safe transfer of patients to and from vehicles and following health and safety and other appropriate protocols and procedures and utilising appropriate equipment and manual handling techniques, being mindful of the safety of self, patients, colleagues and others.
- Communicate with patients, relatives, colleagues, members of other emergency services, public, and other healthcare professionals in calm, caring and professional manner treating them with dignity and respect at all times.
- To maintain patient confidentiality at all times ensuring that all personal and clinically relevant information is only disclosed in accordance with ERS Medical policies and in accordance with Caldicott regulations.
- To undertake a dynamic risk assessment on arrival at the scene of an incident or to support colleagues in this duty in accordance with ERS Medical policy and professional guidelines having due regard for health and safety of self and others and to request additional support as necessary.
- To use/operate all ERS Medical equipment, facilities, vehicles and premises in an efficient and effective and safe manner, reporting faults in the appropriate way.
- To carry out relevant vehicle and equipment checks at the start of duty ensuring that the vehicle is properly kitted, cleaned and stocked, faults or omissions reported and all appropriate recording procedures completed in accordance with ERS Medical policies and procedures. (in exceptional circumstances and due to operational requirements these checks may be delayed but must be performed as soon as practically possible).
- To assist in ensuring the efficient use of medical supplies, maintaining adequate supplies and ensuring all clinical waste is disposed of according to ERS Medical Policy and current legislation.
- To maintain skills and competencies required by the ECA scope of practice and participate in personal development reviews.
- To undertake all statutory and mandatory training required of the role.
- To maintain timely communications with the operations centre according to area of work and to ensure at all times that they are aware of operational availability.
- To report any incidences of a safeguarding or vulnerable person
- Issues in accordance with ERS Medical procedures.
- To report promptly any accident/incident in line with ERS Medical procedures.
- To attend court when required e.g. coroners, magistrates, crown courts and give evidence or be cross-examined under oath.
