Hestercombe Gallery Update

**Creative Director, Tim Martin, updates on what has been happening at Hestercombe Gallery.**:

- Credit: Jem Southam, Winter Walks Three Ducks.In February this year, as part of the ‘Expanding Landscapes: Painting after Land Art’ exhibition programme, we held an event entitled ‘Landscape Resonances’, where co-curator Joy Sleeman explored the ‘after Land Art’ aspect of the exhibition’s title, with particular attention to work by Nancy Holt, Ingrid Pollard and Marie Yates.

Artist Sir Richard Long, who created the new slate work Jackdaw Line, here in the Landscape Garden in 2020, spoke about his long and illustrious career and photographer Jem Southam, who’s work featured in the 2017 exhibition ‘Regions of Light’, was in conversation with art historian, Nicholas Alfrey, looking specifically at two bodies of work.

The current exhibition, ‘Design for Life - Art and Architecture Part 1’, runs until the 2nd July. If you haven’t seen the show, there is still time The exhibition visually explores the historical intersection of art and architecture together with the interactions of artists and architects from the past 65 years.

All eight spaces of Hestercombe Gallery bring together artworks by over twenty international artists and architects, beginning with a late work by Le Corbusier, one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Drawings, paintings, sculpture, models, photographs, film and plans are all represented. Highlights include artists who are well known for creating links to architecture, such as Christo, Elmgreen & Dragset and Marine Hugonnier. Op artist Bridget Riley, Estonian architect Leonhard Lapin, are shown alongside new works by Somerset based artist Toni Davey; with German photography luminary Andreas Gursky placed in context with architectural pioneers and influencers, Superstudio from Italy and Le Corbusier.

The modern and contemporary works are complemented by original eighteenth and nineteenth century watercolours and plans from Hestercombe’s own collections. We have also opened up Mrs Portman’s Victorian Bathroom, with her famous early Jacuzzi Bath.
