We are seeking a dynamic, motivated and forward-thinking senior medical laboratory assistant (MLA) to help support the day to day activities of the special chemistry section, within the biochemistry lab of the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

The department provides a diagnostic Clinical Biochemistry service to University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, General Practitioners through Primary Care Trusts, and a specialist service to other NHS Trusts in Sussex, Surrey, and Kent. It holds ISO accreditation 15189, and is approved by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences as a training laboratory.

Major investment is on-going within the Trust and, with the building of the Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary care centre over the next few years, will reinforce the Trust as a key player in South East England.

Please note, this post is not suitablefor those seeking training as a biomedical scientist.

As part of this role, the successful applicant would work in the special chemistry section, primarily assisting in faecal immunochemical testing as part of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening programme and calprotectin analysis. The applicant would also be expected to assist in supporting the day to day working of biomedical scientists to provide a high quality clinical laboratory service. This includes both analytical and administrative tasks such as equipment maintenance and stock management.

The successful applicant would work alongside and under the supervision of HCPC-registered biomedical scientists to provide a clinical diagnostic service to service users within the trust and to surrounding primary care services and other hospitals.

Special chemistry consists of Toxicology, First Trimester Screening and Manual Chemistry and is well equipped with state of the art equipment for the analysis of drugs of abuse, trace-metals, faecal haemoglobin and calprotectin, renal stone analysis, monoclonal proteins and more, on equipment such as DS2 ELISA work stations, high-resolution mass spectrometers and gel electrophoresis, infra-red spectrometers and more.

The applicant would be expected to work core shifts (Monday to Friday) and participate in a weekend/bank holiday day shift rota.
