The school has in its care an extraordinary range of buildings from chapels and classrooms to a swimming pool and science laboratories; from the 14th to the 21st centuries. The list embraces 11 Boarding Houses and over 100 staff houses, many listed graded 1 and 11.

This built environment is maintained and improved by the Works Department. Under the direction of the Estate Bursar, who also manages the capital projects, the Works Manager has a staff of about 25 operatives and is supported by a Services Manager, Special Works and Planned Maintenance Manager, a Supervisor and an Office Manager.

Members of staff have a great affection for the school and 18 of its number have worked here in excess of 10 years. Combined with this affection, their skills produce a comprehensive and reliable service to the school community.

The department operates out of a purpose-built facility in Norman Road. The building, completed in 2021 includes a well-equipped joinery workshop and full welfare facilities.

The key role of the Senior Plumber is:

- To provide technical support to the management team on all plumbing and heating aspects including existing and proposed designs, parts, components and installation.
- To undertake all aspects of mechanical works to heating and hot water, including control components, on both a reactive and preventative basis.
- The postholder will work on several different assets, including domestic and commercial heating systems, unvented hot water systems, and pumps and controls on both domestic and commercial properties.

**Responsibilities**

The responsibilities of the Senior Plumber are as follows:
**Essential**
- To support and advise on all aspects of plumbing and heating, including recommendations for works on reactive and refurbishment projects.
- Identify and report on the condition of heating and plumbing systems within the College.
- Provide comprehensive lists of plumbing and heating materials required for projects, reactive works and standard stock items.
- Maintain a standard plumbing and heating stock within the depot and order new parts and components as and when required.
- To undertake planned and reactive maintenance work on College assets ensuring optimum serviceability, which meets agreed service levels and statutory regulations.

**Desirable**
- Carry out tasks which require an in-depth technical competence in Building Services Engineering in accordance with CIBSE guidelines and work in other disciplines in which you have the competent skills to do so. Engage proactively with any work associated with delivering performance improvements within the building services environment.
- Carry out all aspects of domestic plumbing work as and when required. This involves day-to-day maintenance as well as alterations to existing installations and minor project work using iron, copper and aquatherm (or equivalent) methods of pipe installation.
- As required. the technical ability to use IT and work management systems (for example OSS BMS and Quadpro).

The ability to work in occupied areas with care and sensitivity is essential. The successful postholder will be responsible for:

- Completing work in timely fashion according to targets and schedules, and as required by other trades.
- Good IT skills. Most of the work will be allocated through a mobile device and the postholder will be required to receive, update records and close work electronically.
- Completing works orders and timesheets through a paperwork generated process, where required.
- Working in accordance with established working practices including risk assessments.
- Keeping abreast of and implementing best practice.
- Undertaking any training that is required, including Health and Safety training.
- Perform other duties working alongside other trades if required and requested by the Head of Department.

**PART II: PERSON SPECIFICATION AND KEY QUALITIES**

**Experience and skills**
- **An apprenticeship in Mechanical engineering, including City and Guilds or equivalent experience.**
- **Sufficient time served as a Plumbing or Heating engineer.**
- **Knowledge and experience of Electro-Mechanical or Building services engineering.**
- **Proven experience in Plumbing/Heating/Ventilation.**
- **A good knowledge of computers and electronic principles is desirable.**
- **Able to work unsupervised as well as within a team.**
- **Able to multi-task and be a team-player.**
- Proactive and will take initiative to resolve issues.
- A flexible and adaptable approach to duties undertaken.
- Ability to prioritise work effectively and manage a fluctuating workload.
- **Experience with Grade Listed buildings is an advantage, but not essential.**
