**Background**

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking synthesis and characterization of hydrogen-bonded self-sorting motifs capable of catalysis and transferase chemistties alongside the use of self-sorting to assemble reconfigurable materials.

**Summary of Role**

The role has arisen as a consequence of the move of Prof Andrew Wilson to The University of Birmingham Its purpose is twofold: (i) to assist Prof Wilson in setting up his group and laboratory activities in Birmingham and further developing a sustainable funded portfolio of research; (ii) to use a series hydrogen-bonded self-sorting systems to exemplify a transformative contribution to synthetic chemistry: specifically the development of bioinspired self-sorting networks which carry out biomimetic syntheses/catalysis and can be incorporated into self-assembled materials so as to permit their (re)configuration.

**Main Duties / Responsibilities**

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
- Work both independently and as part of a larger team of researchers to design, plan and conduct a programme of investigation in consultation Prof Andrew Wilson, using appropriate methods to analyse and interpret research data,
- Generating independent and original research ideas and methods in the design, preparation and analyses of networks of self-sorting hydrogen-bonding motifs capable of performing and regulating synthetic transformations;
- To support the running of the Wilson group’s research activities and communication, through participation at group meetings/seminars, contributing to the supervision of junior researchers and PhD students and acting as a mentor to less experienced colleagues;
- To support ongoing collaborations with relevant researchers including Celia Fonseca Guerra (VU Amsterdam) and Andrew Burnett (Leeds, School of Chemistry).

- A first degree and PhD in chemistry or a closely allied discipline;
- Exceptional background knowledge of contemporary research in supramolecular chemistry;
- Exceptional technical skills and track record in synthetic supramolecular chemistry;
- Experience in the use of modern spectroscopic methods (e.g. 2D-NMR, IR, mass spectrometry) for analysis;
- The ability to lead, design, execute and write up research independently, together with a a track record of peer reviewed publications in international journals;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and the ability to communicate your research at national and international conferences;
- A proven ability to work well both independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to research in a team environment focused on cutting-edge approaches for development of functional self-sorting networks;
- Good organisational time management and planning skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines, manage competing demands and work effectively under pressure without close support;
- Practical experience in one or more of the following: (i) advanced 2D-NMR acquisition and interpretation; (ii) 2D-IR or other ultrafast spectroscopy tools; (iii) quantum mechanical computational methods e.g. DFT to characterize hydrogen-bonding
- Ability to assess resource requirements, use resources effectively and contribute to broader laboratory management.
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
