**Job summary**:

We are recruiting a Wildlife Ranger Supervisor to join FLS East Region Wildlife Management Team, based in Tummel Bridge area. Focus areas include highland Perthshire, Angus, and Fife, with occasional travel to Moray & Aberdeenshire, and support for deer management activities across the East Region.
Sustainable herbivore management is vital to ensure the successful delivery of a range of Scottish Government targets on carbon capture, improving habitats and timber production. This role will contribute to the cull and venison sale of approximately 8000 deer per annum across the East Region including Red, Roe and Fallow deer.

**Job description**:
Sustainable herbivore management is a key foundation to the successful delivery of a range of Scottish Government targets on carbon capture, improving habitats and timber production. This position will work to the Wildlife Ranger Manager and will play a key role in high volume culling Red, Roe and Fallow deer to deliver the annual cull and venison sale of the region’s deer control target.
Interpretation of cull data, browsing impact reports, deer density assessments and population modelling will be required to manage ongoing and future culls. East Region delivers a significant commercial and native habitat program consisting of;
- New woodland creation projects through planting and natural regeneration of native species.
- Restocking following felling c.1000ha per year for commercial timber, diversification and native woodland
- Habitat improvement right across the national forests and land but in particular designated sites, high conservation value habitats and Plantation on Ancient Woodland restoration sites.
- Peatland restoration is a significant proportion of East Region’s work program and is an expanding area to help achieve the Scottish Governments climate targets.
Maintaining deer numbers at two to seven deer per Km2 across the estate is critical to the successful delivery of these targets and future resource availability.
**Person specification**:
**Experience**
Essential:
- Significant experience of directly delivering high levels deer culls on both forest and open range and a clear understanding of the resources and expertise required.
- Up to date knowledge and direct hands on experience of managing woodland deer impacts on trees and vegetation.
- Experience of using a working dog to assist in the delivery of deer control operations
- Significant direct experience of the operation and day to day maintenance of All Terrain Vehicles
- The ability to process deer and day to day management of a large commercial deer larder to an exemplary standard
- A sound practical understanding and experience of Health, Safety and Wellbeing to ensure personal safety during high-risk activities.
Desirable:
- Experience of directly delivering high volume red deer culls
- An understanding of Forestry and Land Scotland's Deer Management, Current Practices and Future Direction;
- Demonstrate a collaborative approach, working across teams to achieve common goals;
- An understanding of population modelling
- Experience of Microsoft Office packages, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook
**Technical**
Essential:
- Full UK Driving Licence, with category B E.
- NPTC/Lantra or equivalent training for the Operation of All Terrain Vehicles
- A valid British Firearms Certificate
- Deer Management Qualifications level 1 & 2 (including large game handling)
- Naturescot Fit and Competency Registration
Desirable:
- A recognised qualification in Wildlife Management, Forestry, or similar land based qualification;
- Proficient in the use of GIS
