Physical Activity Lead/ Get Active Connector

Abergele, United Kingdom Conwy Mind Full time

We believe sport and physical activity should be used to build resilience, support and enable mental health recovery and to tackle stigma, ensuring that people develop a healthy relationship with physical activity.

Nationally and locally Mind have been delivering programmes such as the ‘Get Set to Go’ programme which have furthered the evidence base for the role of physical activity in supporting mental health outcomes.

Whilst awareness of the role of being active for our mental health has grown, we know that many people experience barriers to becoming physically active including:

- Financial barriers, lack of access to suitable sessions, issues with equipment and other practical challenges
- Barriers relating to social anxiety, body image, self-esteem and poor experiences of physical activity often from childhood experiences of PE
- Impact of mental health problems such as low mood or motivation, side effects of medication

We are looking for people who understand the role of physical activity but are non-judgmental and empathetic, understanding that a person-centred approach is needed to start people on a journey that supports them to move in their own way, utilising existing community assets and resources.

The ‘Get Active Connector/Physical Activity Lead’ role builds on the success of previous programmes.

They will work locally with social prescribers and physical activity community providers. They will ensure that the local physical activity sector is knowledgeable about mental health and is able to remove barriers that reduce access to physical activities supporting people with or at risk of mental health problems on their journey to becoming physically active. They will work directly with people with or at risk of mental health problems to design and deliver the programme. The role is varied from liaising with partners, delivering outreach events and activities through to setting up tasters and group programmes.
