SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of criminal investigations at the direction of the supervisor of the Criminal Investigations Division.
The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Conducts investigations in a timely and professional manner. Interviews suspect, victim, witnesses, law enforcement officials and members of the general public.
Conducts interrogations of suspects when necessary or as directed by supervisory personnel providing all suspects with the required statutory constitutional warnings.
Keeps records of activities and makes reports concerning investigations undertaken.
Questions witnesses and records their statements and depositions.
Communicates effectively with witnesses and victims under stressful situations.
Ensures the confidentiality of all investigations and department matters.
Maintains adequate knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Family Code, Texas Motor Vehicle Laws, Texas Health and Safety Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and any related issues involving law enforcement.
Testifies effectively in criminal court proceedings.
May coordinate investigations with appropriate officials in one or more divisions of the Sheriff’s Department.
May contact agencies/organizations outside of the Sheriff’s Department for information and/or input regarding the investigation.
Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree or equivalent semester hours from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice or a related field plus two years of work experience in law enforcement; or High School Diploma or GED plus four years of related work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write detailed investigative reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Basic Peace Officer Certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
Must possess a valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, departmental policy, rules, regulations and laws.
Ability to utilize tact and maintain confidentiality while conducting investigations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officials.
Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
