**The role**

Port Operations Graduate at the Port of Boston for a fixed term of 24 months. We are looking for someone to start no later than August 2024.

You will be initially based on our Port Agency desk, working with and reporting to the Port Agency Manager, who reports to the Port Manager.

The Port Agent represents the ship owners/operators to facilitate the efficient arrival, working, and departure of the ships in port.

Throughout the 24-month period, you will gain experience working with & within other departments including Port Operations and Transport/Order Fulfilment. You may also spend some time assisting with Health and Safety and working with the Marine and Engineering departments.

After passing your 6-month probationary period, you will be enrolled into the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Foundation Diploma in Port Agency, which should take 6-12 months to complete. Depending on performance/results, you may be eligible to continue your studies to work towards full membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

**Primary role**
- Port Agency department - critical front line role in shipping. Ship operators rely on port agents to act as the eye and ears and ensure the safe and secure running of their ships. This involves providing ships husbandry including pre-arrivals, customs clearance, boarding ships, communicating between all parties involved in marine and port operations, arranging bunkers/stores for the ships master, organising pilotage/tugs, liaising with relevant authorities, creation of the statement of facts.

**Other roles you may undertake during the 24-months**
- Port Operations department - ensure the smooth transition of vessels and their cargo from the ship, to the quayside and into storage. This involves working with the operations team regarding ship/berth planning, labour planning, general operations and also undertaking jobs such as tallying, checking, stevedoring, operating plant/equipment such as forklifts & overhead gantry cranes. Full training & competency checks will be given beforehand.
- Transport/Order Fulfilment department - ensure the complete process from point of order to arrange cargo to the customer as an added value service within the port sphere. This involves working within the transport team with stock control, organising transport of cargo to/from site, customer queries & customer order processing.
- Health & Safety - Contributing to and assisting with health & safety such as risk assessments & safe systems of work.

**Accountabilities**
- Participate in any training deemed necessary in order to improve individual skills
- Subject to suitable training for operating plant & equipment (including pre-use checks)
- Effectively promote a health, safety, and environment culture
- Carry out work according to the risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Active approach in identifying improvements and opportunities

**Requirements**:

- To be flexible in your approach and agile in your response
- Attention to detail & ability to multitask
- Willingness to learn and develop as the job requires
- Ability to work calmly with a positive attitude under pressure
- Excellent ability to navigate IT equipment e.g. smartphone & computer
- 5 GCSEs including both English & Maths at Grade 5 (Grade B) or above
- Degree qualified with a minimum achieved or predicted 2:1
- Able to speak, read and write in fluent English
- Full UK driving licence (car) licence

**Working hours**
- Minimum of 40 hours per week on average
- Standard office hours 0700 to 1600 hrs (1-hour lunch break) although a flexible approach will be needed as the ship attendance revolves around tides
- Agency cover every 1 in 3 weekends after initial settling in period
