Sole Gardener

Heathfield, United Kingdom English Country Gardeners Full time

An incredible vacancy has arisen for a Sole Gardener to take on the responsibility for developing and maintaining a 5-acre private garden located near Heathfield, East Sussex. This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled horticulturalist with a keen interest in developing a beautiful garden and being part of developing a garden from early stages.

The owners have spent the past few years renovating the house and have recently turned their attention to the development of the garden. Work has begun on an extensive overhaul and re-design. The owners are keen to employ a passionate plants person with a creative flair and a keen eye for detail to further develop plans and give input to improve the garden.

The garden is divided into different zones with varied herbaceous / shrub beds and borders, a kitchen and cutting garden with raised beds, an orchard, a large pond with potential for development, a new Alitex greenhouse and a recently planted dry garden. There are four outbuildings which require linking to the main house via new pathways and surrounding planting to achieve a greater sense of flow and unity. It is anticipated that the design and development will require 12 to 24 months to complete with maintenance and continued enhancement thereafter. Landscapers may be contracted to assist with certain aspects of the garden and the Sole Gardener will be expected to liaise with the landscapers on any work carried out.

Applicants will have extensive hands-on experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, combined with comprehensive plant knowledge and experience working on development projects in the garden. A recognised horticultural qualification would be desirable, though not essential if evidence of adequate experience can be provided. Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is useful.

This exciting opportunity will suit an experienced horticulturist with excellent attention to detail and with garden planning and development experience.
