To assist with maintaining and developing the garden, the Moat Garden and East Terrace as well as private areas of the grounds. They will assist with the annual turf management programme and help maintain shrub, rose and herbaceous borders. they will also assist with planting trees, shrubs, bulbs and seasonal flower displays, and with monitoring the health of plants and pest control.

Duties
- Maintain shrub, rose and herbaceous borders throughout the year. This includes mulching, pruning, cutting back herbaceous perennials, division, planting, weeding and leaf clearance.
- Assist the gardens team to ensure the gardens and grounds are well presented for events.
- Assist the Head Gardener to manage lawns in the grounds to a high standard. This includes regular mowing and edging, scarification, aeration, feeding, top dressing and re-seeding where necessary.
- Planting trees, shrubs, bulbs and seasonal flower displays at appropriate times of the year.
- Monitor the health of plants throughout the grounds and control of pests and disease.
- Ensure that safe horticultural practices are adhered to, in line with health and safety guidelines, risk assessments and departmental procedures.
- Assist in snow clearing operations during the winter months.
- To assist in the accurate recording of new planting into the Garden. Utilise the IRIS plant records database to maintain all plant records in the Garden and associated areas.

Experience
- Proven experience of working in historic garden environment
- Proven experience of ornamental lawn maintenance including grass cutting, scarifying, aerating, fertilising and lawn repairs by either re-seeding or turfing
- Proven experience of working with a range of garden machinery including rotary and cylinder pedestrian mowers, chipper, utility vehicles and tractors
- Proven experience of the cyclical maintenance of a large high quality landscape garden or estate.
- Experience of working with contractors and with the public
- Experience of working with and supporting trainees/students
- Proven practical experience working in amenity horticulture.
- Skilled craft gardener, ideally with historic/estate management skills within a formal landscape context.
- Familiarity with the cultivation of a broad range of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants and with their associated craft skills.
- Understand and follow key procedures related to gardens operations and to adhere to those procedures i.e., Biosecurity, Health and Safety, Waste Management.
- Ability to use and demonstrate a range of horticultural craft skills and operate machinery to the highest standards.
- Knowledge and understanding of all current health and safety legislation.
- Ability to identify and treat appropriately a range of horticultural pests and diseases.
- Effective time and workload management skills

Interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate easily and efficiently with line managers, colleagues, and contractors.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Ability to work alone and in a team with a considerable degree of independence.
- Proactive - act on own initiative
- Leadership - to lead PPG Placement and contractors on a day-to-day basis in absence of line management.
- Ability to motivate colleagues, and support through periods of change.
