Downpatrick, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

We have an exciting opportunity as a Programming and Partnerships Officer at the South Down portfolio, which includes a diverse range of areas such as Castle Ward, Murlough National Nature Reserve and the Mournes. Through ongoing conservation work, events, and community programming, we want to share each of these special places with new audiences and our members. Being our Programming and Partnership Officer gives you a chance to take a role in delivering our existing visitor offer but also developing a rich and exciting programme that connects our visitors and communities to our places.

This is an exciting opportunity to help make the South Down portfolio an inspiring place where audiences can remember their visit for years to come. Alongside a hard-working and encouraging team we hope you feel compelled to bring your ideas, creativity, and passion to the role.

Hours: 30 hours per week

What it's like to work here:Castle Ward is an exceptional example of both playfulness and connoisseurship in eighteenth century architecture in Ireland. The two contrasting facades of the house demonstrate a theatrical fusion of two distinct architectural styles
- the Classical and the Georgian Gothic
- the house has inspired and entertained its visitors for centuries. Inside, the beautiful interiors and extensive collection not only reflect the demonstrable tastes and history of the Ward family, but also include a variety of objects of national importance. A truly unique house, it is surrounded by an exquisite eighteenth century landscaped parkland, whilst also overlooking the natural beauty and wildness of Strangford Lough. At Castle Ward the creations of man and nature complemented by the virtues of the other are apparent throughout the estate, examples include the water powered cornmill, clock tower and colourful sunken garden. The 21 miles of multi-use trails are suitable for cyclists, horse riders and walkers and families can make use of the playgrounds located on site.

Murlough National Nature Reserve is a fragile 6000-year-old sand dune system owned by the National Trust and managed as Ireland’s first Nature Reserve since 1967. It is an excellent area for walking and bird watching due to its spectacular location at the edge of Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains. There is a network of paths and boardwalks through the dunes, woodland, and heath from where you will see an array of butterflies and wildflowers, as well as access to one of the finest beaches in Co. Down. The dune fields at Murlough are the best and most extensive example of dune heath within Ireland with over 720 species of butterflies and moths, one of which, the Marsh Fritillary butterfly, is of European importance. The site is internationally important for wintering wildfowl and waders. This role will play an important part in engaging our visitors with our important conservation work through a variety of workshops and walks.

What you'll be doing:You'll support to deliver an ambitious programming and event strategy for 2023, enabling a range of audiences to enjoy each site within the portfolio, leaving each of them with a memorable experience.
