Personal Care Assistant

Chelmsford, United Kingdom The Martin Household Full time

We are seeking a Personal Assistant (PA) who can adapt and support the long-term wishes of independence for our client. The successful applicant will support an adult female with learning disabilities who requires assistance day to day, and night-time (24/7 support is required), to make friends and socialise.

We are looking for an individual who has historic experience in care or is inexperienced in care so that we can tailor to the support levels required. **Please note that this position is very tailored to the client and therefore can appear very different to previous care roles.**

We are not a company; we are a small team of PA’s and family that provides person centred support and personalised assistance to the client. Our client has made the decision to live independently with support, having lived in a shared home she wanted her own space.

We are enthusiastic about true life experiences for the client and empowering the client to be as independent as possible with guidance and reminders, at the same time supporting development and learning of new life skills, preserving, and continuing with those she those she already has.

The client is physically capable, however, she requires lots of verbal support and reassurance with day to day living and this, mixed sometimes with what she wants to do and what she needs to do can be opposing, so empowerment and communication is key.

**About you**

We need someone with common sense to strike a balance between the client’s choices and what is practical given obstacles such as finances and time. We are looking for someone to guide our client through life as a protective shadow to keep her safe.

In our experience to promote the most independence from the client you will need to be professional in your approach and understand that this role is not for friendship/companionship to the client.

You need to be prepared to cover other PA absences from time to time, alongside any normal hours you may have, and be able to adapt to the needs of the client. We understand you may have other commitments, meaning those commitments and work can be a juggling act Flexibility is the key and often essential to being a member of our small team.

You will be working on a one-to-one basis with the client, so you need to feel comfortable working under your own initiative. Due to the clients condition she struggles with choices and making decisions. You will need to support the client to make her own decisions, and/or be able to promote more suited choices/opportunities. On occasions may need to make appropriate (best interest) decisions for the client, this we understand can be difficult however we are always on hand to assist in those tricky situations.

The client does not have capacity for safe eating and has eating behaviours that sometimes can place her in unsafe and unwise situation. Information, advice and guidance to the client will form part of your role and you will be required to monitor all aspects of meal prep and eating. In order for the most protected support for safer eating you will need to have a determined approach.

Applicants with strong accents may cause some confusion for the client therefore a basic knowledge of Makaton in this case would be desirable although not essential.

First aid certificate is desirable but not essential.

Please be mindful when contacting for the role that you have read and understood the level of support required within this advertisement.

A full driving licence is essential - Paid Mileage when transporting client. You will be required to have an Enhanced DBS Check.
- Hours: Shifts available regularly and adhoc to cover sickness and holidays, one full weekend a month will be required. Sleep ins will form part of the hours.
- Hours available from 15 - 20 hours a week (over monthly average)
- Employment status: Self employed
- Current typical example of hours:_
- _Week 1 Thursday 3pm - Friday 10am_
- _Week 2 Thursday 3pm - Friday 10am_
