Nursery Cook

Kool Kidz Nursery is registered to hold 68 children per day ranging from 12 week to 5 years old.

The post is for 25 hours a week, working 5 hour shifts between 9 and 3, Monday to Friday.

JOB PURPOSE: To order, prepare and serve nutritionally balanced meals for all children attending the nursery.

MAIN DUTIES:

- To prepare and cook nutritionally balanced meals appropriate for under-fives in accordance with national guidance and the nursery’s nutritional policy for the under-fives.
- To contribute ideas to menu planning ensuring the children receive a healthy nutritionally balanced, multi-cultural diet.
- To maintain a safe, clean and healthy kitchen environment
- To regulate kitchen stock control and collate food purchasing orders as appropriate.
- To meet health and safety and environmental health requirements at all times.
- To liaise with nursery staff regarding children’s specific dietary requirements.
- To contribute to and attend his/her staff appraisal.
- To attend any training events or staff/team meetings as identified by the Nursery Managers.
- To ensure adherence to nursery’s code of practice on confidentiality.
- To keep up to date with current good practice.
- Baking when required.
- To be responsible for the clearing and washing up after meals and the overall cleaning of the kitchen on their allocated days. This includes cleaning of fridges, freezers and cupboards.
- To maintain temperature controls of fridges/freezers and meals and record on appropriate cook safe logs.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria:

- A current Food Hygiene Certificate.
- A current First Aid Certificate.
- An awareness of food allergies.
- Experience and ability to organise, plan and cook nutritionally balanced meals for babies and small children who have different dietary needs.
- Knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety issues including COOKSAFE & COSHH.
- The ability to use food preparation equipment and ensure the economic use of materials, equipment and energy.
- The ability to order correct amounts of food and control kitchen stock.
- Ability to work as part of a team and own initiative.
- Ability to manage own time and prioritise tasks.
- Good customer awareness.
- Friendly, flexible approach.
