Cambridge, United Kingdom Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow Core/Higher (ST3-5) in Medical Microbiology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH).

This post is available from as soon as possible until 05 September 2023 with the possibility of an extension.

This post will be based at UKHSA Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.

The duties of the post will be dependent on your level of experience. They are likely to include participation in the Microbiology Specialty Registrar rota for the provision of clinical services during routine laboratory hours to Addenbrooke’s hospital, and the local community. There may also be the possibility of joining the out of hours on-call rota. While not a formal training post, this position offers excellent experience in clinical microbiology and infection and would provide a solid grounding for those contemplating a career in the infection specialties.

Experience of Medical Microbiology is desirable but not essential. The applicant should have experience in medical specialties where care of patients with infections is a major part. Opportunities are available at either Core or Higher (ST3-5) trainee equivalent level, and will be dependent on the successful applicant’s experience.

In order to be considered applicants must meet the essential criteria outlined in the Person Specification.

Please note that these posts donotcarry Postgraduate Dean’s approval or training recognition.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor and encouraged to participate in all of the training opportunities open to our StRs. These include daily lunchtime teaching (Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Grand Round, departmental meeting, case-based discussion); attendance at specialist ward rounds and multi-disciplinary meetings by rotation (for example Intensive Care Units, Neuro-Critical Care Unit, Transplant patients, Infectious Diseases). If required, an initial laboratory bench rotation will be offered. You will be invited to attend exam preparation sessions with the Registrars, depending on requirements. Completion of audit and small research projects is actively encouraged. In addition to diagnosis and management of infections, you will also gain experience in infection control and antibiotic stewardship.

Please refer to the Job description and Person specification attached for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.
