Chichester, United Kingdom iWork Recruitment Limited Full time

Contract to start on 18-03-24 until 10-06-24 with a possible extension.

**About the job**

The Health and Safety officer supports the Senior Health & Safety (H&S) Officer in providing advice and support to the programmes of work and management systems that comply with HSW standards and policies across WSCC.

You’ll be working under the broad direction of a Senior H&S Officer and will be expected to exercise independent judgement and initiative in most day to day situations, making policy interpretations and practice decisions, and presenting a credible image to clients as a knowledgeable and professional H&S Officer.

You’ll be the technical expert within a specific area of HSW, e.g. advising schools on managing medication.

You’ll also be responsible for running projects under the guidance of the Senior H&S Officer and for designing, delivering, evaluating and developing HSW training, both generally and within the specialism.

There will be a need to travel independently to / from a variety of council workplaces including temporary sites as required, and to work outside at times to carry out site monitoring visits.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) will need to be worn when required, e.g. safety footwear, hard hat, high visibility clothing or disposable gloves.

The role sometimes will require physical demands such as climbing ladders and accessing awkward spaces.

You will have previous experience of providing an effective HSW service with the relevant specialism, contributing to policy and procedural improvements and providing a high level of advice and guidance.

You’ll have experience of developing systems and procedures to improve employee HSW in a large organisation, with diverse workplaces and multiple HSW risks, issues and environments, and the HSW of non-employees affected by another employer.

You’ll be adept at building effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.

**Key responsibilities**

Act as a technical expert, responsible for advising compliance with HSW legislation, the Client’s HSW policy and other relevant procedures and safe working codes of practice across a specific area.

Provide professional advice and expertise to a number of Business Units and Services.

Monitor work activities, ensure that safe working practices and procedures are being followed, and report unsafe acts and conditions to the appropriate Business Unit Line Manager.

Assist in the development of HSW policy, corporate guidance documents, risk assessments and templates.

Design, deliver, evaluate and develop HSW training, both generally and within the specialism for a wide range of audiences.

Prepare succinct and accurate reports for the Senior H&S Officer, Senior Management Teams, and attend meetings for relevant items as required.

Carry out HSW inspections, audits and site monitoring visits to measure the effectiveness of the Client's H&S policy and corporate guidance documents as per the project initiation document (PID) that details the monitoring programme to be conducted to ensure compliance with HSW and fire safety law and industry standards.

Investigate and monitor accidents and incidents, ensuring adherence to statutory reporting requirements and identify and respond to patterns of injury and ill-health.
