The Arun & Rother Rivers Trust (ARRT) is an environmental charity working with partners and
stakeholders across the Arun & Western Streams catchment to enhance and protect the water
landscape.

Over the next 18 months ARRT is part of the Catchment Systems Thinking Cooperative (CaSTCo), a
collaborative national partnership between the Rivers Trust, United Utilities and other
partners from the water, environmental NGO and academic sectors. The project seeks to
revolutionise the way citizen science gathers water environment data and how this data evidence
can be used to drive collective action and make decisions about river catchment health.

The project is one of eight ‘Demonstrator’ projects across England piloting different
approaches towards monitoring river heath, including water chemistry and biodiversity. The

**projects will also focus on**: monitoring equipment, methods used, data collection, analysis,
visualisation, sharing and the use of the citizen science data for catchment decision making
and planning. The Arun & Rother Demonstrator project is focussed on soil health and
supported by our local partner Southern Water.

With a focus on the Upper Arun and Rother, the Arun & Rother Rivers Trust Soils and Water
Officer will work in collaboration with the CaSTCo team, Southern Water and local partners
including the Arun & Western Streams Catchment Partnership (AWSCP) members, landowners,
land managers and farmers.

In addition, the Soils and Water Officer will work closely with the ARRT Volunteer Catchment
Coordinator to integrate the soil health and water quality citizen science work.

**Key duties & responsibilities**:
Citizen Science for Soils

To research, trial, test and implement citizen science scheme/s focussed on soil health,
sediment, and water quality.

Actively participate in CaSTCo Task & Finish Groups to help co-design & develop
soil citizen science methods, resources and training which help landowners/managers, farmers
& community groups record and participate in citizen science schemes.

Recruit & train volunteer citizen soil scientists with help from the Volunteer
Catchment Coordinator.

Support the soil health monitoring programme, collate, store, analyse soil health
monitoring data and produce visualisations to communicate to others.

Soil Carbon & Catchment Resilience Pilots with Southern Water

Undertake training to support delivery of the project and the transfer of knowledge to
others.

Work with Southern Water to support the delivery of Catchment Resilience Pilots, focussing
on Natural Capital & Soil Carbon.

Using the outputs from Natural Capital mapping, engage with farmers landowners/managers
about soil carbon & natural capital, helping to secure sites for nature-based solutions.

Conduct catchment walkover surveys to record in field observations about water flows,
habitats, cropping and soil condition.

Communications & Engagement

Develop communication & engagement material with Partners to steer and inform an events
programme.

Design and assist the delivery of an events programme with Southern Water and other local
partners.
