**Job Overview**:
We are recruiting for two Strategy Advisor roles (1 x Research Sustainability Team & 1 x Investment Strategy Team).

The Research Sustainability team is responsible for analysing the resilience of the UK’s research and innovation system. The team provides advice to colleagues across UKRI on options for improving the financial sustainability of the UK research base, and considers the relative opportunities and risks of making policy changes or influencing incentives across the system. The team works closely with data analysts and strategic policy teams across UKRI and the nine councils.

The Investment Strategy team provides strategic coordination across UKRI’s nine councils. It is responsible for coordinating UKRI’s submission to major fiscal events (for example, budgets and spending reviews), ensuring that UKRI’s investment portfolio aligns with our (and the government’s) strategic priorities. The team also works closely with the nine councils and with central government to deliver existing and emerging R&D priorities. The role will be based within the Cross-cutting Themes sub-team, which is responsible for providing advice on UKRI’s Place, Commercialisation and Talent functions.

**Key Responsibilities**:
Whilst specific team responsibilities may differ, the purpose of the Strategy Advisor role is to:
Provide advice and challenge, supporting efforts across the Strategy, Performance and Engagement Group to address key UKRI goals. This will include, for example:

- Using evidence, analysis, and insights to develop options and advice on a portfolio of issues, often to rapid timescales, that will inform key decision making and support new strategy development
- Supporting UKRI teams to draft key strategy and policy documents for internal use, and at times, external publication
- Assisting to provide high quality advice to the UKRI CEO, UKRI Board, senior officials and Ministers in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)
- Leading/ supporting projects that investigate issues relating to the research and innovation, including work commissioned to external consultants
- Representing your team in internal UKRI meetings

Modelling UKRI’s values and piloting new ways of working to address complex issues that span UKRI councils, policy areas, and/or government departments. For example:

- Working together with colleagues across UKRI councils, external stakeholders, and with policy leads in DSIT and other Government departments to develop evidence and policy options
- Being part of, and giving to, a hard-working team. Supporting your team with day-to-day reporting of information, responding to key commissions, and providing accurate information for correspondence and Ministerial commissions.
- Supporting programme management and planning for your team, for example coordinating team planning / away days etc.

**Strategy Advisor (Research Sustainability) Responsibilities**:
In addition to the above Key Responsibilities you would be taking forward the Financial Sustainability Team’s communications and engagement plan to influence, inform and partner, enabling the team to:

- Join up work across different parts of UKRI
- Align more closely with Government priorities and needs
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders/organisations
- This will involve working closely with colleagues in Comms to design and publish materials from the programme.

This role reports to the Head of Sustainability and Engagement.

**Strategy Advisor (Investment Strategy) Responsibilities**:
In addition to the above Key Responsibilities you will be:

- Monitoring progress on how UKRI is delivering against its current spending review priorities across its Place, Talent and Commercialisation functions.
- Building and maintaining an evidence base that demonstrates the impacts of our Place, Commercialisation and Talent investments as part of UKRI’s preparations for the next spending review
