**The London Symphony Orchestra**

The LSO is unique among UK orchestras for owning and operating its own recording studio, performance venue and music education centre, LSO St Luke’s. With a world-leading education and community programme, LSO Discovery, the LSO connects people from all walks of life to the power of great music.

The LSO also runs Bell Percussion Hire, supplying the UK’s orchestras and bands with instruments and equipment from our warehouse in Tottenham.

**Role Overview**

The LSO requires a Percussion Hire driver to deliver & collect percussion equipment for our customers. The driver will report directly to the Bell Percussion Hire Manager. The position is being offered initially as a 12-month fixed term contract and can either be worked on full time 5 day per week basis or on a 3 day per week part time contract. During quiet times you may be asked to help load and unload any LSO equipment for the Orchestra itself from other trucks.

**Key Duties**
- To drive the Bell Percussion van.
- To load and unload Bell percussion Hire instruments at venues.
- To maintain a good working environment at the LSO warehouse, ensuring the space is functional for all users including LSO Live, LSO St Luke’s, LSO Library & the LSO Archive
- To ensure the Bell Percussion Hire equipment is kept in good condition
- To assist in preparing all hire orders, and check equipment back into the warehouse when the hire equipment is returned
- To assist the Percussion Hire Manager in matters relating to the maintenance of the Bell Percussion Hire vehicle
- To liaise with venues regarding load in & out times for hire equipment
- To represent the Orchestra as a member of the Operations Team
- To ensure all legal requirements regarding driving and working hours are met and maintained
- To keep a record of hours worked and update the Operational staff rota with actual hours worked at the end of each week
- To be involved in the future planning of all Bell Percussion Hire operations
- To ensure a safe working environment and that safe working practices are adhered to
- To be responsible for the safety of the percussion hire instruments whilst in the care of the London Symphony Orchestra
- To ensure the Bell Percussion Hire van is cleaned internally and externally at regular scheduled intervals
- To ensure that all Health and Safety policies are adhered to, and to report any Health and Safety issues to the Operations Manager
- To work with the Operations Team in loading/unloading the orchestra truck, or setting up for orchestra rehearsals and concerts if there are quiet periods within the hire business schedule

**EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED**

**Essential**
- Class B driving license
- Some knowledge of the orchestral percussion instrument sector, including some knowledge of the breadth of percussion instruments.
- Lifting and handling experience; to be able to handle large, heavy, valuable items using safe manual handling techniques whilst making every effort to avoid damage occurring.
- Excellent verbal, as well as written, communication skills.
- Proven computer skills
- The ability to work within a closely knit team.
- Diplomacy, patience and tact.
- Willingness to work unsocial hours.
- Ability to work to demanding deadlines and be able to work under pressure.

**Desirable**
- Experience of working with an orchestra
- Some musical knowledge
- Knowledge of the problems and complexities of logístical planning
- Knowledge of the methods and practices employed in handling, packing, loading, unloading, and stowing of musical instruments
- Awareness of the value of the instruments and special consideration that must be given when dealing with delicate and awkward instruments
- Proven knowledge of relevant Health and Safety Regulations, and an understanding of the need to comply with these regulations
