**Activities and Responsibilities of the Post**

Principle Purpose of the role

The Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Forensic Collision Investigation Unit (FCIU) comprises of bases located at Stowmarket, Suffolk and Wymondham, Norfolk, both providing operational cover across both counties.

As a Forensic Collision Investigator Supervisor, you will have responsibility for line and professional management and development of both teams which provides a 24/7 response to fatal, life threatening, serious injury and police vehicle collisions. You will be responsible for supervising all the investigations carried out by the FCIU, supporting and advising Senior Investigating Officers (SIO) and Lead Investigating Officers (LIO) in the gathering and interpretation of evidence and information to establish the causes of collisions and provide expert evidence as required at court.

You will lead the teams working towards achieving accreditation to ISO 17020 and 17025 standards. Supporting all members of the team to achieve appropriate qualifications in Forensic Collision Investigation.

Main Activities of the Role
- Engage with, implement and abide by departmental procedures in line with the statutory requirements of Forensic Science Regulator Codes of Practice and Conduct and the International Standards Organisation (ISO) 17020 / 17025 standards to provide a quality service through accreditation
- Co-ordinate FCIU staff levels appropriate to the level of demand and manage the welfare and health and safety of staff to ensure an ongoing response capability
- Provide expert evidence and opinion to the investigation team and the Courts, whilst ensuring that at all times you remain within your competence and expertise, in order to provide a professional and unbiased account
- Maintain appropriate records of reconstruction investigations and exhibits to ensure accurate audit trails and to support the criminal justice process
- Ensure the FCIU equipment and vehicles are maintained, calibrated and serviced in line with manufacturers requirements and maintain monitoring of current and future technological developments and scientific developments
- Supervise all investigations carried out by the FCIU, ensuring production of reports within agreed timescales
- Represent the FCIU on specialist forums and at Force, Regional and National meetings where required
- Any other duties that are commensurate with the role and grade as may be requested by management

Person Specification

It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:

- Proven experience as a collision investigator
- Recognised qualifications in Forensic Collision Investigation, minimum De Montfort UCPD and Certificate of Higher Education, or equivalent
- Good communication skills, mindful of the needs of different people/audiences
- Skilled in using specialised software related to own area of work to extract, analyse and report on data
- Competent in use of Microsoft Office software, specifically Excel and Word
- Demonstrate a good degree of self-motivation, an ability to use own initiative and have good problem solving skills
- Good interpersonal and team working skills, able to deal with people at all levels
- Follow expected national and local standards of behaviour, ensuring the FCIU culture maintains those standards
- Able to review and assess individual and team performance against expected standards, providing objective and effective feedback and ensuring corrective actions are taken where necessary
- Good organisational skills, able to effectively manage and prioritise work

It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:

- Professional qualification in management
- Previous supervisory experience
