**Job summary**:
Building a strong Commercial Function in Government, and with it the right commercial capability, is at the heart of a far-reaching programme of Civil Service reform.

We have already made significant progress through the establishment of the Government Commercial Organisation (GCO), our single employer of senior commercial talent across government. This role will sit within the GCO, but based in our Ministry of Defence - Air Commercial commercial team delivering departmental objectives.

**Job description**:
The Air Commercial team is part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Commercial Function and the Government Commercial Function (GCF). We are embedded within the Royal Air Force fast-paced Military Headquarters delivering innovative commercial solutions and assurance, making sure the RAF gets the maximum value for every pound it spends.

The Air Commercial Head of Major Projects and Programmes is responsible for overseeing the design and execution of commercial strategies for Air Commands strategic project and programme portfolio including the RAF’s research and development unit (the Rapid Capability Office).

Focused predominantly on pre-sourcing and sourcing, you will lead a highly capable team of commercial professionals providing commercial judgement, support and expertise to complex transformation and R&D projects. Using developed leadership, stakeholder management and negotiation skills you will be responsible for ensuring that commercial activities are supporting successful project outcomes, driving value for money, and that commercial risks and opportunities are understood and well managed.

This role provides a unique opportunity to work as a commercial leader within RAF HQ, leading delivery of a multi-billion pound, strategic and complex project portfolio that will enable the next generation Royal Air Force. You will get insight and build knowledge and expertise into the way the MOD and government works, with a new experience and learning around every corner.

The role is part of the Air Commercial Senior Leadership Team and Commercial Delivery Hub, in addition to your immediate area of responsibility you will also play a key leadership role within Air Commercial, supporting continued commercial transformation within Air Command and MOD as well as contributing to wider government commercial initiatives.

**Person specification**:

- Operate as part of the Air Commercial Senior Leadership Team, working collegiately to deliver Air Commercial's leadership objectives.
- Oversee the design and delivery of commercial strategies which will enable the RAF to achieve its objectives and demonstrate value for money.
- Lead a commercial delivery team, energise, support, and develop to continuously improve and achieve commercial milestones that will enable successful project outcomes.
- Represent the RAF commercial position and build trusted and credible relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including senior industry representatives, military officers and the assurance and scrutiny community.
- Develop and contribute to a pan MOD and government network, share learning, and experience and ensure consideration and alignment with other relevant initiatives and projects.
- Support growth of commercial capability by providing coaching to Commercial and non-Commercial staff across Air Command and wider MOD
- Contribute to the Government Commercial Function and the Defence Commercial Function through participation and support of key initiatives.
