Scottish Forestry is responsible for delivering Scottish Ministers’ forestry ambitions and priorities. We provide policy, support and regulation for Scotland’s 1.4 million hectares of forests.

As Scotland’s forestry regulator and advisor, Scottish Forestry’s work impacts on people, communities, businesses and environments throughout Scotland and beyond. This role presents a fantastic opportunity to help shape our business and how we can deliver more for Scotland.

The six strong Business Development team sits with the Policy and Practice section of SF’s National Office. Business Development provides advice and expertise to the Scottish Government and Ministers on all aspects of commercial forestry in Scotland including skills and education. This post will report directly to the Head of Business Development.

**Job description**:
You will be the key person responsible for the delivery of one of the activities contained in the Scotland Forestry Strategy, namely “Supporting efforts to enable the sustainable transport of timber and mitigate risks of potential negative impacts”. You will also be heavily involved with “Encouraging and supporting innovation, research and development, and the adoption of new technologies and practices throughout the wood fibre supply chain” and wider business innovation in the forestry sector.

The main delivery mechanism for sustainable transport is the Strategic Timber Transport Fund (STTF) which you will manage. This will involve close collaboration with colleagues in Transport Scotland and a wide range of stakeholders in local authorities and the forestry sector. You will be the SF representative on the Timber Transport Forum and the TimberLink Users Group as well as participating in other meetings as necessary. The STTF also includes the TimberLink project, which encourages timber movement off roads and onto ships, you will be looking for other opportunities to move lorries off roads. Linked to transport, but also part of the innovation element of the role, is developing the decarbonisation of timber transport. You will be looking for other opportunities for innovation at a variety of scales, for example bio-refining or non-timber forest products, to support rural development and work closely with other colleagues in the team when interests, such as skills development, overlap.

You will support the Head of Business Development with timber supply and demand issues, for example, the implications of the recent 25-year production forecast, and be the lead for woody biomass issues. In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining the windblow contingency plan.

The role will require travel and some overnight stays.

Duties will include:

- Advise on wider strategic timber transport issues
- Managing the Strategic Timber Transport Fund (STTF) covering the Strategic Timber Transport Scheme (STTS) and contracted funding to the TimberLINK shipping service;
- Provide Ministerial support, including briefings, correspondence and official support as required;
- Support work on timber supply and demand, e.g. data analysis, identifying data gaps and working with others to fill them (remote sensing, GIS and Forest Research);
- Look for innovations that can support the forestry sector.
- Be responsible for issues surrounding woody biomass including managing the process of producing the annual report on the use of wood fuel in Scotland.
- Revise and manage the Scottish windblow contingency plan

**Person specification**:
**Experience**

Essential:

- Working in the Forestry industry or related rural sector
- Dealing with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
- Representing your organisation in a public forum
- Report writing and ability to summarise reports for verbal or written presentations.
- Problem solving ability, coupled with good analytical skills

Desirable:

- Understanding of timber transport or other rural transport issues
- Providing briefings to senior management or ministers
- Experience of running a grant scheme

**Technical***

Desirable:

- Membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, or working towards membership.
