Family Systemic Psychotherapy Qualifying Level

London, United Kingdom Institute of Family Therapy and Systemic Social Action (IFT) Full time

**Chair of the Family and Systemic Psychotherapy Qualifying Level: MSc Equivalent course (year 3 and 4); 8b**

**Accountable to: IFT Directors**

**The IFT Qualifying Course**

IFT trains approximately 300 people per year, from foundation to advanced level, to work with families, systems, networks, organisations and wider systems. Students work in statutory settings such as the NHS and Local Authorities as well as community-based contexts, and describe our training as ‘life-changing’

Given that ‘diversity’ initiatives alone do not necessarily lead to meaningful change, a core value at IFT is the importance of increasing diversity of ideas, experience and contexts. This has led us to critique traditional ways of operating and seemingly benign processes that uphold the status quo, shrink our imaginations and hamper our ability to respond meaningfully and usefully to marginalised communities. We have come to the conclusion that one such way we are being constrained is through our links to universities. As a result IFT is decoupling from universities, in order to develop a family systemic qualifying course that is more accessible to a broader and diverse range of people and reinvest resources into supporting students, while retaining our robust standards.

**How the quality of the qualifying course will be evaluated and validated**

The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the leading organisation for regulating psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors in the UK, has accredited our course with a glowing review.

In addition to the quality assurance infrastructure already in place
- IFT has developed an independent external advisory board to audit, evaluate and ensure the maintenance of best practice and standards
- The money we do not give universities will go back into enhancing the quality of training we provide
- Being able to recruit more diversely, will mean being more responsive, effective and relevant
- The rigorous programme of learning, high standards of teaching and assessment and diverse trainees’ experience, would make for a high quality training experience

**General description of the job**

IFT are seeking to employ a course chair, who will take a lead on all aspects of the running of the course, by:

- Designing creative teaching sessions that adhere to IFT values based on systemic practice as social action
- Keeping all training materials updated and ensuring that they represent diverse voices, particularly those from marginalised and minoritised backgrounds
- Supporting course tutors and encouraging them to embed IFT’s values in everything they do
- Supporting students with their systemic learning and encouraging them to embed IFT’s values in everything they do

**Main duties**

**Management**
- Overall management responsibility for the smooth running of the Family and Systemic Psychotherapy Qualifying Level: MSc Equivalent course, which includes admin tasks that support tutors, students and the institute
- Taking responsibility for planning the curriculum, arranging the programme and speakers, and to oversee and support teachers contributing to the course
- Providing leadership and support to the tutor staff, and ensuring their work is properly and sensitively managed, appraised, and reviewed
- Line management responsibility for the IFT tutor staff

**Teaching, Research and Marking**
- Having overall responsibility for the quality of the teaching and directly teaching on the course
- Understanding, engaging in and supporting students through an academic concern / misconduct, complaints and / or appeals process where necessary
- To take a share of the marking, ensuring marking is undertaken by other tutors and ensuring results are provided to the Exam board
- Supporting students with research ideas, theory and practice

**Administration tasks and meetings**
- Using Sharepoint, OneDrive and Turnitin as required.
- Course committee feedback
- Eliciting feedback from students to feed back into the training design and development of the course
- Attending termly Course Committee meetings and two Open Evenings a year
- Overseeing preparation of the course Handbook in conjunction with the Course Administrators and the Chairs of other collaborative courses
- Ensuring appointment of student representatives to the Course Committee
- Gathering and collating student feedback and responding appropriately
- Attending Examination Board meetings
- Attending meetings with the Directors of the Institute as required

**Updating training materials and decolonising the curriculum**
- Updating training sessions such as powerpoints, reading lists and so on
- Developing creative ways of conveying complex systemic ideas that do not rely solely on the written word eg using videos, music, photography, group activities, and so on
- Ensuring that teaching adheres to IFT values based on social justice
- Reviewing and further developing the IFT Guidance for Speakers, Tutors, Teachers an
