RiverRidge operates Northern Ireland’s most integrated waste management operation. Initially acquired in 2011, the company has undergone substantial investment over the past number of years which has transformed it from a small skip hire and landfill business to the fully integrated waste recovery operation it is today.

Today, the company is able to divert significant tonnages away from landfill through a variety of customer focused diversion solutions. The company’s commitment to landfill diversion is supported by its multi-site leading edge mechanical treatment infrastructure as well as its Belfast located waste to energy facility_._

**About the Placement**:
Throughout your placement, you will gain fantastic insight and experience working within this fast-paced waste management operation to allow you to get the training and experience that you need to equip you for a professional career in environmental, health and safety.

Most of your training will be ‘on-the-job’ training, working alongside our experienced EHS team, however we will endeavour to provide you with any relevant training that will support you during your placement.

***Example responsibilities include**:

- To take a proactive role in assisting the EHS Team and other divisions at each site to ensure all EHS processes and procedures are being adhered to, to ensure compliance with our site rules and applicable legislation
- To play a major role in raising and maintaining awareness of Health and Safety/ environmental issues by being active and evident on site, leading by example and challenging people in situations that are a cause for concern
- To carry out site EHS and fire audits, report findings and carry out/monitor remedial actions
- To assist with accident/near miss reporting and investigations, suggest remedial actions and monitor progress
- Collate accident statistics and lead proactive initiatives to reduce accidents and improve the health, safety, and welfare of all employees
- Collate all agreed/required company statistics and KPI’s pertaining to Health and Safety and environmental issues
- Help collate and deliver Safe System of Work and Toolbox Talks in EHS related topics
- Assist with health, safety and environmental inductions for new employees, contractors, or visitors
- Maintain the company’s EHS policy
- Responsible for assisting with data handling, inputting data into various databases, manipulation in Excel of monitoring data and chemical laboratory results and trend analysis
- Assist with control of contractors to include permit to work/inductions/procedures/safe systems etc.
- Develop skills in environmental monitoring, reporting and employee engagement
- Field based work, including sampling and monitoring of landfill leachate, landfill gas, groundwater, surface water and particulates
- Provide support to the continual development of RiverRidge’s Integrated Management System (IMS) through EHS software in accordance with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standard

**Essential Criteria**
- Ideally a 2nd year student, currently studying a relevant health, safety or environmental degree that allows you to partake in an industrial placement year
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Initiative and an ability to think logically to solve issues
- Ability to collaborate, interact and work within a team
- Able to support multiple tasks and projects
- Ability to present data in a clear and structured manner
- Good understanding of Microsoft Office software (e.g. Excel and PowerPoint)
- Ability to travel to other sites throughout the group as and when required (driving license)
