**Job summary**:
The Department for Business and Trade negotiates trade agreements for the UK and promotes UK Trade and Investment around the world. The Global Supply Chains Directorate works across Government to strengthen critical supply chains. We assess vulnerabilities in critical supply chains and work with government departments to identify actions to improve resilience.

The Insights & Analysis Team is a multi-disciplinary analytical team that sits at the heart of the Global Supply Chains Directorate. An exciting opportunity has become available for a strong strategic thinker to lead a high performing team of 14 analysts and drive forward high quality and timely analysis on UK critical supply chains. The team lead on several high-profile workstreams, including undertaking detailed supply chain mapping exercises to inform resilience strategies; delivering rapid analysis to inform senior decisionmakers’ response to crises and emerging priorities; developing data-driven analytical products and dashboards to improve government visibility of critical supply chains; and development of new disruptive event monitoring systems to identify emerging risks.

**Job description**:
This is an exciting time to be joining as Head of Insights & Analysis, where you would lead high profile analysis on some of the key opportunities and threats facing the UK today.

The post holder will provide leadership on a broad programme of work which includes:

- Lead a multi-disciplinary team of 14 analysts, setting the vision and direction for the team, build analytical capability, and plan resource.
- Oversee the delivery of multiple competing demands, balancing the need of short-term deadlines with longer-term strategic programmes of work.
- Be the authority across government on critical imports and supply chains analysis, building strong links with analysts across government.
- Direct the team’s supply chain mapping activities, ensuring analytical outputs provide actionable insights and recommendations for improving supply chain resilience.
- Provide strategic direction for the continued development of analytical tools and dashboards to enable stakeholders across government to access data driven assessments of critical supply chains and emerging risks.
- Oversee the team’s rapid response analysis, ensuring senior officials have a timely and high-quality evidence base to inform response.
- Drive forward the directorate’s monitoring & evaluation programme of work to ensure a strong evidence base on directorate’s activities and impact.
- Lead the team as the analytical function for the directorate, providing policy colleagues with timely and relevant analytical outputs to support activities such as international engagement and development of the critical imports strategy.
- Work alongside the wider senior leadership team to manage the 50-strong directorate and actively contribute to corporate requirements and the development and maintenance of a positive culture.

**Essential Criteria**
- Proven team management and leadership skills, and an ability to deliver through others.
- Effective senior stakeholder relationship management and influencing skills.

The role is open to members of the Government Economic Service (GES) plus any civil servant or external applicant who can demonstrate they meet the requirements of the GES.

Applicants from outside the Civil Service or who are members of the GES will be assessed against the GES competencies, which are:

- Application of knowledge;
- Analysis of data
- Effective communication

Internal applicants from within the Civil Service who are members of the GSS of GORS will be assessed against the competencies for those analytical professions.

For GSS members, we will assess you against the GSS competencies which are:

- Acquiring data/understanding customer needs
- Data analysis
- Presenting and disseminating data effectively
