United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit Health Care Support Workers for main Theatres, in Grantham. Vacancies will be available in a variety of clinical specialities within the Theatre complex at Grantham Hospital, with contracted hours to suit both full time and part time working.
As a substantive member of the healthcare team, you will have an opportunity to complete the Care Certificate and it is expected that all staff employed into the role of substantive Health Care Support Worker will complete this element of the qualification within the first twelve weeks of employment. Full support from a dedicated apprenticeship team will be provided to achieve this.

We are committed to helping our staff balance their work and home lives and ensure they feel supported, valued and appreciated.
1. Prepare the Operating Theatre for Surgery. Assist with setting up operating list write theatre boards etc. Ensure level and rotation of stocks as per theatre policy and identify and implement any adjustment required. Ensure equipment is available to facilitate smooth running of operating lists.
2. Collect and Return Patients from Wards/transfer line, checking their documentation is correct and complete. Support patients at all times maintaining privacy, confidentiality and dignity. Act as third person in the anaesthetic room, passing on relevant information to correct person.
3. Provide support for patients who are having a procedure under local anaesthesia, using effective communication skills.
4. Assist with transfer of patients, positioning, equipment connection etc. using safe lifting and moving techniques
5. Assist theatre and medical staff with gowning, gloving etc. in line with theatre policy. Support the Scrub Nurse with sterile trays, implements, soft packs, sutures etc. acting as a runner. Weigh used swabs and record blood loss for anaesthetist.
6. Maintain cleanliness of all theatre areas before, during and after surgery.
7. Act as clean/dirty runner in infected (including MRSA, Covid etc.) cases, cleaning theatre in line with Infection Control Policy.
8. Input information on ‘Theatreman’ accurately - filling in staff names, times, details of operation and WHO safety checklist. Send for patients as appropriate.
9. Process and record specimens in accordance with theatre policy.
10. Clear and check contaminated equipment and clinical waste in line with local and Trust policies and national guidelines.
11. Handle COSHH substances in line with current theatre policy.
12. Keep changing rooms and coffee rooms clean and tidy, dispose of rubbish, recycling and linen bags appropriately.
13. Theatre Receptionist duties; sending for patients, answering phone calls, liaising with different theatres, contacting surgeons and other departments (wards, x-ray, plaster room etc.) in an appropriate manner.
14. Identify, report and document hazards in accordance with local policies.
15. Putting trays and instruments away appropriately
16. Mentor new HCSW’s and assist with induction of new staff.
17. Contribute to the out of hours service as per local arrangement.
18. Keeping up to date with all mandatory training.
