Overview of the Role
We are looking for a proactive, self motivated Senior Finance Officer with a strong commitment to customer service to provide an outstanding finance service. You will be part of the University's Finance Service but will be deployed to the Faculty of Business.
Managing a small team, you will report to the Faculty Finance Manager and work closely with finance and non-finance staff across the Faculty and University. You will be an expert in financial transaction processing, ensuring that the Faculty is provided withexcellent service and clear processes to manage this critical area of activity. In addition, you will assist with planning, forecasting and budgeting and be responsible for your own specific areas of accounts, including restricted, development and endowmentaccounts
You will have substantial experience of working in a finance role, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to build strong networks.
Main duties and responsibilities
As a Senior Finance Officer, your main duties will include:

- Managing the small transaction processing team; ensuring that all Faculty expenses, purchase requests, sales invoices, fee related forms etc. are processed efficiently, accurately and in line with University policy. Approving transactions, including throughfinancial systems, ensuring all appropriate approvals are in place;
- Providing expert operational advice and training as required, liaising with staff and students and actively promoting best purchasing and financial practices within the Faculty. Maintaining a high level of knowledge and providing advice and guidance to othermembers of the team for any exceptional or unusual queries;
- Maintaining and developing systems, procedures and financial controls for the Faculty ensuring an excellent, professional and cost effective service is provided at all times;
- Working closely with other members of the finance team, ensuring compliance with University Financial Regulations and Procedures and liaising with the university's internal and external auditors as required;
- Managing purchasing processes, including Faculty's 'goods received not invoiced' items and retrospective purchase orders, liaising with the Purchasing team as necessary;
- Having responsibility for the management of the restricted, development and endowment fund accounts, including; liaison with academic leads regarding rules and restrictions, as well as all matters pertaining to setup and maintenance (including determinationof the correct accounting treatment and contractual documentation), budgeting, forecasting and management reporting;
- Proactively monitoring actual income and expenditure against plan and preparation of month end reports, including; producing reports, reviewing accounts with budget holder, investigating variances and the recommending actions where appropriate for specificareas;
- Assisting with the preparation of annual and five year financial plans for the University annual Integrated Planning Exercise, quarterly forecasting and budgeting process to strict deadlines for specific areas;
- Responsibility for the preparation of the statutory annual financial returns, e.g. HE-BCI;
- Responsibility for ensuring the month-end checklist is completed as part of month end closedown, resolving/escalating outstanding issues as necessary and ensuring audit checks are completed each month;
- Preparing journals, including at month-end and year-end closedown, and carrying out account reviews at year end;
- Preparing ad hoc reports and analysis for the HoF academic stakeholders and other budget holders as required.
- These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post.
- Qualifications and skills Essential
- A recognised accounting/accounting technician qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience;
- Substantial experience of working in a similar role including experience of financial systems and procedures, budgetary control systems and a detailed working knowledge of financial planning and forecasting;
- Strong leadership skills and experience of management or supervision with the ability to lead by example;
- Strong customer service ethos with commitment to providing a high quality service and understanding the challenges facing the Faculty;
- Excellent IT skills with proficiency in MS Office Applications, particularly Excel.
- Desirable
- Experience of the Higher Education sector;
- Good working knowledge of SAP reporting or similar system.

- Experience of maintaining confidentiality and adhering to the data protection act and management of sensitive information.
