We are looking to appoint a new substantive Consultant Anaesthetist to join the Anaesthetic Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. All provisional job plans are available in the attached Job Description.
- Have duties that include provision of anaesthesia, pre-operative assessment, post-operative visits, administration, teaching and audit. There will be a job plan review immediately upon starting to discuss use and scheduling of SPA time. This will be followed by a further review after 3-6 months to ensure that the SPAs are appropriately used and fulfilling the needs of the individuals and the department.
- Work in multidisciplinary teams providing high quality care to patients and work well with colleagues providing an advisory and consultation service.
- Participate actively and enthusiastically in the clinical governance, teaching and management activities of the department.

The interview process for this post includes a simulation assessment on the 7th March 2023 and a panel interview on the 17th March 2023.

The postholder will participate actively and enthusiastically in the clinical governance, teaching and management activities of the department;
The postholder will record all absence from the Trust using Department and Trust processes; provide this record at annual job plan review; and provide cross cover for colleagues’ leave when necessary;
The postholder will comply with all department and Trust policies, procedures and guidelines, and work providing care in line with national standards;
The postholder will take personal responsibility for completing all mandatory and statutory training;
The postholder will participate in appropriate Continuing Professional Development activities; complete annual appraisal and revalidation requirements; work to achieve objectives set at annual appraisal and job plan review;
The postholder will ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times;
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country. The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006 and was the first Foundation Trust in the South Central Strategic Health Authority. The Trust is Reading’s biggest employer and may form the central hospital for one of the country’s new medical schools.

The Anaesthetic Department is part of the Planned Care Group. Our department has a reputation throughout the region for high anaesthetic standards and training. We are well represented at senior management level and on several national committees and organisations. Junior doctors who have been here at an early stage in their careers often ask to return at more senior training grades. We have a reputation for encouraging individual interests and for clinical, educational and managerial innovations. We aim to provide high standards for our patients and are a happy, cohesive department. We are currently working towards RCoA ACSA accreditation.

The post holder will have active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the anaesthetic department;
The post holder will have participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the anaesthesia service;
The postholder will comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor at all times.;
The post holder will be required to join the general on-call overnight (AOD) anaesthesia service (1:18 ‘on-call’ plus 1:18 weekday evening maternity cover).

The out of hours consultant cover is split into 3 groups as follows:

- 1:18 prospective cover AOD = Anaesthetist of the day
- Weekday 07:30 - 17:30
- Weekday 17:30 - 07:30 non-resident on call cover
- Weekend + bank holiday 17:00 - overnight non-resident on call cover
- 1:18 prospective cover maternity evenings
- Weekdays 17:30 - 20:30
- 1:9 prospective cover AOD- Weekend and bank holiday 07:30 - 17:30 resident cover
- 1:9 prospective cover trauma list
- Saturday 07:30 - 17:30
- Sunday and bank holiday 07:30 - 13:00
