A fantastic opportunity to volunteer for a respected and well supported local charity. All help makes a real difference and is greatly appreciated. You will work in a warm, well-lit, and inviting historic building. Volunteers enjoy social interaction and find contributing to our charitable purpose to be a rewarding experience which creates a sense of purpose and supports mental wellbeing. Working conditions and tasks will vary depending on the events and exhibitions underway.
Training details: We offer an induction, and we buddy up volunteers until they feel comfortable working on their own. Volunteers are not expected to know about the local history as this is something you will learn in the role. You will be given every opportunity to learn about local history and culture.
Line Manager: During opening hours there is an on-duty person with overall responsibility for the centre volunteers. Your line manager will usually be an Operational Manager or a named senior volunteer who is on duty at the time.
Hours of Work: Volunteers generally work either 10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm.
**About the Garioch Heritage Centre**
Housed in the former Inverurie locomotive works, Garioch Heritage Centre tells the story of life in this area from the earliest settlement to the present day and sheds light on the domestic and working lives of local people.
The centre consists of a large museum area on the first floor (accessible by stairs and a lift). On the ground floor we have a library and photograph browsing area, a multi-purpose meeting room, café, retail space and a large ground floor gallery. The meeting room and the downstairs gallery are flexible spaces available for community or business use and to accommodate exhibitions and events, some of which are run to raise money to provide financial stability for the Centre.
Our upstairs gallery museum area is constantly being reviewed and further enhanced, incorporating the use of increased technology, introducing a broader range of artefacts, and creating a meaningful historical timeline. Exciting ongoing projects include the planned reclamation and restoration of an original inspection boat from the era of the Inverurie to Aberdeen Canal and the creation of educational materials for virtual learning.
The Centre is currently open from Thursday to Sunday 10am-4pm, with additional opening days from April to October. We offer free admission and are entirely reliant on donations and our fundraising activities to meet our costs.
**About the Garioch Heritage Society**
The charity which owns and operates the Garioch Heritage Centre is the Garioch Heritage Society. We are a community-based organisation established in 1987. In 2004 we registered as a Charity and in 2009 became a Company Limited by Guarantee. These steps were taken in preparation for operating a heritage centre.
The Society is managed by a volunteer committee and three Directors. Collectively they offer a range of business, educational, engineering and media skills to provide governance and meet operational needs. The Society operates the Garioch Heritage Centre, which opened to the public in March 2017, and we completed a community buy out to become owners of the centre in March 2021.
**Volunteer Roles**
At the current time we can only consider adult volunteers but check back again soon if you are looking for opportunities for young people.
