The Council’s legal team has a permanent, full time (37 hours per week) vacancy for a legal officer with experience in general civil litigation, and specifically housing law.

The work is plentiful and varied. You will take instructions, issue/defend proceedings, take statements and conduct advocacy in claims for the council (and its arms-length housing management organisation, Derby Homes), in the County Court, typically for:

- Arrears, Possession and Trespass proceedings
- Anti-social behaviour
- Disrepair (a substantial area at present)
- Other (not housing-related) debts

While you will be a specialist housing legal officer, the litigation team deals with all types of court work (excluding childcare, which is a separate team) and we work together to cover peaks and absences, so a variety of experience (or the willingness and ability to work in other areas) would be beneficial.

You:

- have good, recent advocacy, drafting and negotiation experience;
- are a good communicator giving clear, practical advice;
- can work on your own initiative and as part of a team;
- have recent experience of contentious housing law;
- can provide evidence of managing your own caseload and meeting deadlines.
