To undertake retinal grading at primary, secondary, arbitration, digital surveillance and referral outcome grading making clear and concise clinical decisions. To be able to recognise sight-threatening retinopathy that requires fast-track referral to the Hospital Eye Service (HES) and take appropriate action to ensure timely referral. To make sure referrals are made to an HES for treatment as appropriate in accordance with the National Objectives and Quality Assurance Standards. To update and maintain the screening to referral to treatment timelines on the Retinal Screening shared network drive.

To participate in the internal quality assurance processes for grading during primary detection of disease / no disease. To make independent decisions on referral for treatment for qualifying patients. To actively assist and prepare MDT meetings and presentations To impart clinical advice to professional colleagues, patients, Optometrists by verbal, written and electronic means. To ensure the timely turnaround of grading of images by the grading team so that where appropriate patients are referred for treatment of their retinopathy quickly and seamlessly and be responsible for the grading team To develop an understanding of Cataracts, Glaucoma to judge the right referral pathway for patients and the applicable Programme Cohorts To assist the Programme Manager in the preparation and organisation of inspection visits e.g.

Quality Assurance and Accreditation visits which involves liaison with external agencies, Hospitals and Optometry practices participating in the service To operate the Optomize software and grade patient images appropriately at appropriate grading levels and act as point of contact for grading queries and enquiries by other graders, photographers To assist as and when delegated by the Programme Manager in the evaluation of service performance through a variety of reports and data analysis To assist the Programme Manager to maintain clear, concise grading and quality assurance records in accordance with the guidelines. To ensure that patient referrals by the overall grading team to HES are completed within agreed national time-scales and help prioritise urgent gradings needing completion. To assist the Clinical Lead and Programme Manager in arranging and participating in Internal and External QA including peer review sessions and provide advice, and demonstrate grading outcomes to less experienced team members.
