London, United Kingdom Royal Institute of Navigation Full time

**About RIN**

The Royal Institute of Navigation or "RIN" is world-renowned professional membership body, bringing people together to share knowledge and understanding on all aspects of navigation. RIN's activities cover the full breadth of navigation and precise timing, spanning land, sea, air and space and includes animal navigation, human cognition, navigable cities and buildings and all domains of the practice of navigation. Since its inception in 1947, the RIN and its members have played a pivotal role in the dynamic landscape of positioning, navigation, and timing technologies for over 75 years. Originally conceptualized by its first director, Michael Richey, as a crucial meeting ground for individuals with diverse interests in navigation; “not so much a body for the association of people with similar interests as a necessary meeting place for people of quite dissimilar interests without which progress in navigation could not take place.”. Over the course of its history, RIN members have been at the forefront of the dramatic transformations in navigation technology which have taken place in the 20st and 21st centuries. As such, the RIN holds a unique archive of national importance. This archive not only narrates the UK's pivotal role in navigational development but also sheds light on the global collaborations that facilitated revolutionary advancements like radio navigation systems, GPS, and innovations precise timing..

Our work environment includes:

- Modern office setting
- Food provided

**About the RIN Heritage Project**

In an effort to make these archival resources more accessible, the RIN has begun a comprehensive Heritage project over the past three years. The project has previously produced an exhibition held at the Royal Geographical Society which featured installations from the Ordinance Survey and the Vaka Taumako Polynesian Navigation Society. This exhibition traced the history of the RIN alongside the development of GPS receivers from unwieldy and expensive military apparatus to the tiny receivers found in every smart phone.

A significant milestone in this ongoing initiative is the creation of the RIN virtual Museum, established to preserve and showcase the rich history of RIN and UK navigation. The objective is to expand and enhance this virtual space, providing a platform to share the untold stories and experiences of RIN members who have had extraordinary careers in navigation—stories that have thus far not been foregrounded.

By bringing these archival resources to life, the RIN aims to facilitate research and, eventually, grant public access to a wealth of knowledge that has shaped the field of navigation over the decades. The Institute's members and leadership, as trailblazers in the field, have been at the forefront of ground breaking developments and innovations, making their contributions an integral part of the history of navigation.

**The Heritage Internship Role**

The RIN Heritage Project is looking to make the archive an accessible resource for further study. This role will be the first step towards that goal. The work will be on the archive mapping project which will involve hands on work with the Royal Institute of Navigation Archive. The purpose of the project will be to create a top level listing of what is available in the archive with a view to establishing the foundational work for later archival projects. As the Heritage Intern, you will be working as part of a small and focused team where you will be expected to get involved and work independently. This is a great opportunity for someone who would like to build experience for their C.V.

**What we offer**
- Support from core team and the project manager to ensure you can succeed in this role
- Laptop and associated equipment
- Opportunity for flexibility in hours and days worked
- Depending on progress of work, there is scope for you to help shape how this project develops. We will offer encouragement, support, mentoring and training where needed.
