The Waste and Environmental Officer role is primarily accountable for owning and delivering solutions and effective approaches to waste and environmental management, including deriving waste management options for new projects; supporting the facility in compliant removal of redundant assets and effective management of the POCO/liabilities budget. At the forefront of the role is providing a service that ensures waste is managed, sentenced and exported compliantly. The role also needs to be forward looking to anticipate longer term needs of customers and stakeholders of the Preston Facility and working with the capability teams in ensuring that all wastes from the full lifecycle of projects is managed.

The role holder will require a hands-on and can do mindset, combined with sound communication skills to influence stakeholders and collaborate across multidiscipline teams to create alignment in delivering an effective waste and environmental management service to the facility.

Main Responsibilities
Main Responsibilities for Waste and Environment Officer:

- A hands on approach to deriving waste routes and providing a waste management service to the facility, directly looking after the logistics, including internal customer interactions and liaising with external stakeholders/service providers.
- Derivation of monitoring and assay strategies, including radiometric considerations to ensure robust characterisation methodologies are applied, and alignment with industry wide practices for clearance and exemption.
- Partnering with internal customers to ensure that all new projects (operational and decommissioning) have identified waste routes and allocated project resources to protect against production of orphan material or secondary wastes that don’t have a clearly defined exit routes.
- Deputising and supporting overall team function on matters of radiological protection and material control as part of the wider service provision to the facility.
- Appointment as the Environmental representative, liaison with site permit holder on matters which may impact on site discharges and emissions or require adjustment to the facility process description, CEARs, Techniques Document or site EPR permits, authoring and adjusting justifications, asset qualification, process control documents and the Facility Register of Environmental Aspects.
- Liaison with the environmental assessment team on matters of the safety case, BAT and environmental assessments.
- Leading on external stakeholder interactions that are associated with environmental management practices (e.g., ISO audits and regulatory interventions) to ensure positive outcomes.
- Provision of assurance activities and technical support in respect to assets and processes used in waste sentencing assets (e.g., Drum scanners etc).
- Seeking out beneficial ideas and practices from wider industry, implementing continuous improvement activities to ensure effective use of resources and technology in waste management processes.

Essential Criteria for Waste and Environment Officer:

- Experience of hazardous and/or radiological waste management practices, processes and legislation.
- Demonstrable experience in taking on responsibility, and using initiative, to prioritise work effectively under pressure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; be able to multitask and re-prioritise to meet changing needs and project deadlines in a team environment.
- Holding a degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Waste and Environment Officer:

- Experience of interfacing with regulatory inspectors and ISO auditors (e.g. EA, LRQA).
- Experience of deriving assay methodologies (chemical/radiochemical) for discrete and bulk media.
- Environment Management qualification holder.
- Radioactive waste advisor status (RWA).
