**Job Title**: MAINTENANCE OPERATIVE/CARETAKER

**Reports to**: Registered Manager

**Purpose and summary of job**

To carry out the day-to-day maintenance on the school building, its services and grounds in order to ensure that the school is maintained in a safe and efficient functional order.

Main

**Responsibilities**:
**General Maintenance**:

- Liaise with the Head/Manager regarding maintenance work to be carried out.
- Log, update and report works using the VLE/IT based records- including supporting others in similar IT based matters
- Maintain the school and Homes legislative checks to ensure it remains fully compliant
- Report any faulty appliances, damaged furniture / equipment and any other potential hazards.
- To play a part in the learning experience of the pupil where needed including supporting work with the pupils where learning pathways require this- eg: to form part of work experience
- Ensure the maintenance of the school and grounds is maintained to the highest standards. **This may include**:

- Keeping any sheds or outbuildings and areas in which waste is stored in a clean and tidy condition.
- Clearing snow as well as gritting the drive, paths and any areas to which the pupils, Visitors or Staff have access.
- Where applicable, cut the grass around the building as well as tending to any flowerbeds, hanging baskets, vegetables etc- especially out of school hours
- Cleaning and maintenance of all signs / lighting.
- Under the direction of the Head/Manager re-paint any areas of walls or woodwork which requires it.
- Undertake general plumbing duties as required, where this is not possible source a qualified person to carry out work.
- Undertake general electrical duties as required, where this is not possible source a qualified person to carry out work.
- Undertake general carpentry/joinery duties as required.
- Ensure all relevant building certification is kept up to date for inspection purposes.
- Check the fire alarm points weekly, including fire exit and door retaining devices, and fire emergency lights as specified in Young Foundations procedures.
- Ensure all extraction vents and lighting are kept clean; replacing any defective light bulbs.
- Test and record all portable appliances as specified in Young Foundations procedures.
- Record water temperatures as specified in Young Foundations procedures.

**Health & Safety**
- Maintenance and Health and Safety checks and records eg water and fridge temperatures, fire alarm, exits and emergency lighting
- Report immediately any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a pupil, colleague, self or other.
- Understand and ensure the implementation of the health and safety policy, emergency and fire procedures.
- Report any faulty appliances, damaged furniture or equipment and any potential hazard to the Head/Head of Care/Administrator

**General**:

- Ensure the company vehicles are kept daily serviced. I.e. Oil, water, tyre pressure & windscreen wash. Ensure that vehicles are legal including MOT and tax.
- Promote and ensure the good reputation of the school both on and offsite.
- To maintain and demonstrate a positive attitude towards pupils, staff and others.
- Ensure all equipment used is clean and well maintained.
- Maintain / secure any vehicles and undertake driving duties if required.
- To demonstrate non-discriminatory practices in all aspects of work.
- Notify the on-site manager as soon as possible of the inability to work, and also on return to work, from all periods of absence.
- To support the development of the process, practice and delivery of effective support/person centred planning.
- Maintain complete confidentiality of all matters concerning the school, pupils, Staff and related work.
- Participate in Staff and where needed pupil meetings and attend training sessions as required.
- Participate in agreed systems of appraisal and individual performance review with the role of employee.
- Understand and ensure the implementation of the Health and Safety Policy, Emergency and Fire Procedures.
- To ensure quality targets are met in accordance with agreed standards.
- Ensure the security of the school is maintained at all times.
- Adhere to all Young Foundations policies and procedures within the defined timescales
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as required by the Person in Charge.

**Emergencies**:

- Be 'on-call' for any emergencies, which may arise.
- In the event of an emergency (outside the control of the Maintenance person), it is the responsibility of the Maintenance person to carry out the actions detailed in the relevant Young Foundations procedures including securing the necessary expertise to rectify issues
- In such circumstances that a 'fault' cannot be rectified, details of said fault should be given to both the Head and Head of Care or Deputy in their absence as soon as possible so that services are not disrupted for lengthy periods and appropriate instructions can be given on action to take.
