Band 3 Genomic Assistant - Cancer Genetics Triage Team

The Oxford Centre for Genomic Medicine is seeking an organised, enthusiastic and compassionate individual to join our service as a Genomic Assistant
- Cancer Genetics Triage Team. The successful post-holder will play a pivotal support role in helping our service deliver precise cancer risk assessments and healthcare treatment including screening (such as mammograms and colonoscopies) to the patients and families we care for. The post holder will be key in working closely with the Senior Cancer Genetics Nurse and Genomic Associate, along with the Core Cancer Genetics team, comprised of Genetic Counsellors and Clinical Geneticists. The post holder will also be key in providing clinical support in the form of phlebotomy (as needed, training will be provided) the upkeep of our outpatients department and providing clinically based administrative support to clinical members of staff (e.g. Genetics Nurses, Genetic Counsellors, and Clinical Geneticists). The post is ideal for an experienced CSW who has a passion for rare diseases, or an individual building their CV towards a senior level career as a Genomic Associate, Genomic Practitioner or Genetic/Genomic Counsellor

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

Provide an important clinical assistant role to enable the delivery of quality clinical services in established outpatients setting.

Provide Adult Phlebotomy in Ward C outpatients on an ad hoc basis patients and their relatives for hereditary cancer genetic tests (including DNA storage) when there are barriers to having this done through local services.

Training will be provided to collect blood samples from patients, label correctly and send to the laboratory for analysis using the following procedure:

- use the patient records to positively identify the patient
- explain the procedure to the patient
- reassure the patient if they are nervous or distressed
- insert a hypodermic needle into the vein and draw the blood into a tube
- correctly label the blood sample with sticky labels
- send the sample to the laboratory within required timescale

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Training will also be provided to gain competence in accurately recording and reporting patient family histories of cancer, as requested by clinical staff:

- family history diagram symbols
- clinical software
- pedigree assistant, phenotips, STARLIMS
- both paperbased and digital systems as we transition to fully digital

At all stages follow set procedures carefully to prevent blood samples being contaminated or mixed up

Monitor and order clinical supplies via the NOC systems on a weekly basis

Monitor resus trolley and drugs fridge on a daily and weekly basis as part of a departmental rota

Monitor infection control/cleanliness and contents of outpatients

Carry out monthly quality audits (cleaning, hand hygiene etc.) alongside Genomic Practitioners and report any cleaning issues to the appropriate services. Ensure cleaning and maintenance is carried out in a timely manner.

Support the patients’ rights, choice and personal beliefs, ensuring respect, privacy and dignity are maintained at all times

Take responsibility for own development and to develop/maintain relevant skills and knowledge, to actively participate in self-development in accordance with objectives identified at appraisal review.

Acknowledge the limits of own competence and decline any duties, which cannot be performed in a safe and skilled manner.
