Biomedical Scientists are expected to work their core contracted hours in accordance with Agenda for Change.

Trainee BMS’s rotate between all sections of Cytology under the direct supervision of HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with the aim of gaining knowledge and practical skills in all aspects of the Cervical Screening Programme and diagnostic cytopathology. The overall aim is to gain registration with the HCPC by completion of the IBMS/HCPC Registration portfolio during their training period.

BMS staff are required to maintain their competency in all areas of their duties. Aspects of individual involvement may alter as competencies evolve over time.

To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations in all sections of the laboratory (Cytology), ensuring that analyses performed within the department are carried out in a timely and accurate manner.

Perform Non-Gynaecological cytology preparation room duties. This will include booking in specimens on LIMS, preparing samples for processing, staining of preparations using automated and manual processes. Maintaining of the equipment used for the preparation of non-gynaecological cytology, liaising with Biomedical Scientist when problems arise, or when the service requires.

Perform manual techniques which will require a degree of interpretation such as the preparation of diagnostic cytology samples and assessing the quality of material as required

Perform cervical cytology preparation room duties to include receipt of LBC samples from internal and external sources as required. Ensuring samples are receipted in accordance with departmental policy. Processing samples on highly complex T5000, staining and coverslipping samples. The post holder will ensure that appropriate reagents/materials are available, when the service requires.

Perform cervical cytology molecular room duties to include labelling of LBC samples for aliquot from internal and external sources as required. Loading samples on P480 for aliquot, ensuring samples are loaded appropriately on Cobas 6800/8800 for PCR testing in accordance with departmental policy.
