About the role

This is an exciting time to work for Stevenage Borough Council and you will play a key role in helping us make Stevenage Even Better. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to work at the heart of the Council, engage with all service areas, and really develop your skills, experience and understanding.

In this apprenticeship role you will support the team to fulfil key corporate Policy, Performance and Resilience functions. You will play an integral part in the continued development and implementation of a robust Policy & Performance Management Framework, including the facilitation of internal support networks and guidance for staff. You will take a central role in resilience activities, supporting the team to respond to major incidents in Stevenage and taking a keen interest in effective incident management. You will support the performance team to implement and monitor initiatives that improve data integrity and be comfortable taking a lead supporting others to help ensure that robust performance monitoring is maintained across the council.

In addition to growing your skills and experience on a practical level, you will also undertake a Level 4 Policy Officer qualification that will grow your knowledge in the following areas:

- Introduction to policy, including definition, function and value of the policy-making process
- Overview of project and programme management principles, methodologies and tools
- How organisations influence public policy, and the bounds of legitimate influence
- The key principles of stakeholder engagement and analysis
- Understanding and using results from consultations and other data Sources
- Key powers and functioning of local authorities.

The post holder will be required to attend Level 4 Policy Officer Apprenticeship training once a week for 18 months as a requirement of the role. This training will consist of tutor led seminars - 2 half days each month via Microsoft teams. These will be supported by 1:2:1 and small group activities with the tutor every 4-6 weeks, sessions generally run for 60-90 minutes. Followed by quarterly review meetings with both learner and line manager in attendance.

About you

You will have the ability to build strong rapport and relationships at all levels within the organisation. You will be able to bring together information from a range of sources and provide analysis and recommendations and be able to communicate these verbally and in writing.

You will have a keen interest in local and national policy, be willing to learn, keen to develop and progress, and interested in knowing more about how the council works. You will be focused on outcomes for our residents, and the importance of constantly seeking ways to improve the services we provide.
