**External Communications Lead, Oncology**

The External Communications Lead, Oncology is responsible for developing and implementing external communication strategies for AstraZeneca OBU UK, that build, maintain and protect the company’s reputation. This role will drive awareness of, and belief in, our bold ambition to eliminate cancer as a cause of death; enhancing the company’s ability to innovate, launch new medicines and improve patient outcomes. In addition, this position will manage the OBU social activities and have responsibility for our busy calendar of regulatory and access milestone communications.

Working closely with Communications, Policy & Advocacy, and Government Affairs colleagues, the External Communications Lead, Oncology will build effective thought leadership platforms that position AstraZeneca OBU strongly across key topics - Patient access to and uptake of precision medicines; optimisation of cancer pathways; earlier and accurate diagnosis of cancer; and our people (i.e., inclusion & diversity).

The role is part of the Oncology Corporate Affairs team, which sits within the UK Corporate Affairs department. The UK Corporate Affairs department consists of Communications, Policy & Advocacy and Government Affairs teams. The teams work closely with both the NHS-focused business in the UK and our wider UK footprint of research and manufacturing, and team members are part of a broader Global Corporate Affairs network across the company that takes a strong interest in the UK as a “home country”.

**Typical Accountabilities**
- Develop & deliver above brand, cross-oncology external communications strategies, materials, campaigns and events that promote, improve, and project AstraZeneca OBU’s vision, brand, and reputation to external stakeholders
- Develop and build an effective thought leadership platform for AstraZeneca UK in line with the company’s priorities
- Work closely with all functions (including Commercial, Regulatory, Compliance, Legal, Medical Affairs, Digital, Market Access) to ensure a coordinated and compliant approach to external stakeholder engagement
- Manage a sizeable communications programme for products reaching regulatory and access milestones; including close management of relations with patient advocacy groups on these topics, alongside the Oncology Policy Lead
- Working in close coordination with the External BBU and Corporate Communications lead, support effective momentum behind our medical missions to accelerate clinical practice change & our digital innovations programmes
- Working in close coordination with the Head of Oncology Corporate Affairs, support executive communications for the Head of Oncology, UK, and other OLT members
- Initiate, cultivate and maintain relationships with media and high-level influencers to protect, nurture and build the reputation of the business
- Support UK specific crisis management plans and procedures to rapidly take UK action as the need arises, in ongoing alignment with the global crisis team
- Ensure alignment of all external newsflow with internal communications platforms & channels
- Support the Oncology Internal Communications manager in delivering highly-motivating internal communications programmes, particularly around key events such as annual conferences

**Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience**

**Essential**:

- Extensive experience working in the healthcare/pharma communications field (AD level in agency)
- Top-tier media relations experience and public relations background, with demonstrated results within a leading company, agency, government or NGO
- Strong digital communications experience across both social media and websites, from content creation to technical delivery
- Consistent track record of leading external corporate reputation matters, issues and crisis management for a sophisticated enterprise with multiple stakeholders
- Experience with communication of regulatory and policy issues, and ability to translate them into clear and concise messaging
- Proven ability of influencing colleagues and senior leaders across organisations
- “Self-starter” with evidence of capability for matrix and cross-functional working
- Ability to utilise channels for business benefit within resource limits
- Can effectively delegate and manage 3rd parties to deliver outputs
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise accordingly

**Desirable**:

- Pharmaceutical Industry Experience
- Relevant vocational qualifications or equivalent experience
- Understanding of NHS Policy and the UK political landscape and processes
- UK experience
- Understanding of ABPI code
